Are refurbished (remanufactured) cameras really in "as new" condition? Or is it wiser to shell out the extra 100 bucks for a brand new machine?

I actually like buying refurbished stuff. I look at it this way: sometimes an item has some small problem, easily fixed but still a nuisance.
Refurbished means someone else found the flaw, and had to do the returning.

At least in theory returned items get checked, including the ones that get returned for a number of reasons OTHER than any fault (like operator problems) .

You still have a full warranty, and a real person (as opposed to a conveyer belt and machine) has looked at it. The original problem has been fixed, you've saved some money and you should be better off than with a brand new one.

I've always heard that even if a box is opened, the item used, then for whatever reason the camera had to be returned to the store...the manufacturer would have to sell it as "refurbished"...even if it was never broken. (not sure if this is true though!)

Hmm good points all. Since the manufacture has checked out the machine itself, it should be up to full standards. Besides, it comes with full warranty.

In any manufacturing process there is a (hopefully) small number that fail quality control checks. Most of the time these units are not a total loss, but have had a single task not done correctly, and are sent back to the operation not done correctly. In order to catch as many as possible, there are usually several quality checks made along the manufacturing process, and a mistake can be found at any step. The final product is the same once the mistake as been corrected.

Refurbed just means it was the final quality inspecter that found the mistake -- that inspector being the customer.
