I'm having a tough time deciding on a telephoto lens. I think that an "IS" lens would be best but "L" glass would be nice. This lens from canon has the focal length that I'm looking for but is it the best lens for the money? Does Sigma or Tamron offer a better lens in this price range? Should I just get the EF 70-200mm f/4L USM and give up the IS and extra focal length. Thanks.

Its a good lens.
Or on the other hand a 70-200 f/4L is about the same price (or cheaper? correct me if im wrong).
the 70-200 f/4L has much clearer results.
Based on reviews.

See that's what it comes down to in the end is price and optical quality. The prices are almost identical for the two. I think I'll probably get better shots with the 70-200 F4L but I don't want to wish I had more focal length. Will a 1.4x converter degrade the optical quality if I got the "L"? |

The Sigma 70-300 APO is a great deal at $180, very good optically.
The next move up is the Canon 70-200 F4 or sigma 70-200 2.8.
A 1.4 TC should be fine on either. You may find you don't miss the exta 100mm 90% of the time and would rather have the extra stop of light instead. I moved form a 70-300 to a 70-210 and don't miss that 100mm at all - i love the ability to shoot in lower light.

I agree with Chris, I have a 100-300mm. Theres not much difference between 200 and 300. Although there is, but you can always crop it, and the difference won't make much of a.. er.. difference. |
