I'm not sure if anybody has this difficulty, but sending my 20Mb RAW files to DPC for validation is a real pain.

The DPC system can't handle this file size and they need to go via external FTP accounts. I wanted to 'self-validate' an image in a current challenge and have been unable to do so because of this issue.

Could Site Council allow the JPEG file attached to a RAW+JPEG shot to be sent as a validation image instead? It is the same image, taken at the same time, but obviously wouldn't be the identical quality used to process the final submission.

That should be fine as long as the JPEG hasn't been saved through editing software. Note that you can also send large files via a ticket in the Contact section.

I shoot RAW+Small JPeg and invariably I edit the JPegs to see how they look and if I want to make a larger print or file then go on to convert the RAW file, but 99% of the time the submissions I make to DPC are from the JPegs because of the small size required by the site.

With this in mind, I take it that I would submit the small JPeg original if I was ever asked for validation. Am I correct?

Lori,
Yes, you can submit the (unedited) small jpeg as a proof file. You can do so even if you actually used the RAW file as your "source file."

Paul,
I'm surprised that the RAW files for the D2X are that large. 5D RAW files tend to be in the 12-14MB range. Is there a larger embedded JPG that's causing the increased file size?

Hi Fritz, the D2X creates 19.5 megabyte Raw 'NEF' files, but I must confess to adding to the problem by converting them to Photoshop 'DNG' (Digital Negative) files as part of my workflow.

As you know these files will be support by Adobe basically 'forever' so I convert to 'futureproof' my digital negs. Disc space issues don't make it practical to store the NEF's and DNG's.

Langdon just PM'd me to say that he is working on upping the 16Mb DPC limit, so all this may be resolved soon :-)

One more suggestion, you may be able to compress that 20mb Raw file quite a bit by zipping it before you send it. Zipping it won't change anything about the file.

Edit to add: I recently sent files in for validation as a zip package, so I know it works.
