I have a Nikon D50, and an oldish Vivitar 283 flash, which I like. But my understanding so far is that using this flash on the hotshoe, or via sync cable would trigger a voltage surge, and zap the electronics in my camera.

So, I've been using a Wein peanut slave, to trigger this flash, and doing all exposure adjustments manually. The peanut slave is a pain...it falls out, and fires unreliably, depending on whether the dingly bit is facing the camera flash or not.

Can I use a long sync cable from the camera to this flash, or will it destroy the camera's electronics? Would it zap things if I use it on the hotshoe? Is there a way to tell, without trial and error?

What other solutions do I have?

...and I forgot to ask.....if I connect this setup,... can I plug that sync cable into the camera, without causing damage?ebay link to studio flash setup
