Envious. I'm terribly, horribly envious...
That said, any of you out there who've had a 300D and have upgraded to a 30D? Reason I ask is I want to know if there's an appreciable difference in "rapid fire" mode - say shooting something where you take several frames rapidly, then have to wait for the camera to catch up....
That's the only thing I can see worth upgrading for, and even then, it wouldn't be for awhile.
Congrats, Melissa! Enjoy the new "toy" and make sure you share some of those first pictures! (And don't forget to read the manual - all sorts of nifty things to learn, but it's fun!) |

Yes. difference between a 3 legged horse and a new covette in a race up hill.
The rebel does 2.5 FPS for 4 frames. the 30D in high speed mode does 5 FPS (twice as fast) and at large JPG i think it does 25 or 30 frames. before it has to pause - that's six seconds of continous shooting. In realtiy, it nevers pauses. press and fire off 5 or 7 shots, then do it again, and then again. ok, that's 21 shots and you paused so it probably caught up.
the other thing i found super cool was how fast it can review an image. like instant (on a sandisk ultra 2 card). no more waiting to see what you took or to zoom in, etc.
if you move the focus point (or would like to) you have several options, the one i chose was to use the multicontroller (a joystick like button on the back of the camera). Wow. nice.

If you guys had bought Nikon, you'd be out taking pics to post rather than sitting around talking all the time. Now let's see some work with expensive otys! :)

i do think that the burst rate is a great benefit. in the days that my 20d was shipping, i read everything that i could about everything to do with it. when it came, i had high expectations, and it blew even that to pieces. i am convinced that the write speed is better than canon says. AND, the 30d is better than the 20d.

Melissa - change your profile. :-) (Yes, I know it's been said - just want to see how you look with Canon under your username!)
And to the rest of you who sing the praises of the higher speeds of the 30D? A pox on all of you! My Rebel is only, what, a year and a half old? How can I justify getting a new body already?? Sigh.... |

You always need a good backup camera and the 300D could be just the camera for a backup. Buy the 30D

LOL!!! I already have that link, thanks. :-)
Seriously, too funny. The even funnier part is I'm considering it. And I only take pictures to post for mediocre scores on DPChallenge, and to use as wallpaper on my computer(s). And I do print the occasional picture to hang on my wall. I suppose I should pay myself for those so I can justify all the expenses, huh? |

The biggest difference is the AUTO FOCUS !
Works excellent on all 9 focusing points. On the Rebel works on the middle one ,others are giving fuzzy photos.
Dynamic range of RAW photos is better.
Watch out not to over sharpen photos, change the settings to negative numbers. |

Mine was only a year old and the shutter broke .. that was justification enough for me .. I now have the 20d with the 300d as a backup and I am very glad I made the step up!!

You're gonna sell your 300D on ebay (mine just went for $450 to give you an idea).
you'll eat at home more, skip the latte's, walk more and drive less.
Are you a mother? Mother's day is coming.
Help a little old lady across the street and reward yourself for doing a good deed.
you're helping the economy.
you only live once, and could die tomorrow. better get it shipped overnight then.

Profile changed. I can't post any pictures taken with it yet because I'm at work.... all night! I have to install software onto my computer and stuff, and actually be where my computer is. There should be pictures this weekend because I have some paid work (the reason I went and paid off the camera now instead of waiting).
I already ordered the 50mm lens someone recommended to me as a good fast lens at a good price. |

There. That looks much better on you. :-)
And the 50mm lens is indeed very sweet. Just don't drop it - it will separate into two pieces, which can be put back together again but will have a definite "sticking" point in focusing after that.
So I need to get the 50mm repaired, THEN maybe think about the 30D. Ain't givin' up my mochas, though. But may consider riding the bike to work a couple days a week.... |

Spend some quality time with the manual. When you do go out shooting, it will help. I have some preferences for Custom Functions, so I set them up like this:
C Fn 1 - 4 (I prefer pushing a big button with my right hand rather than a little fiddly button with my left... One handed operation is nice)
C Fn 2 - ON (No degradation of image quality at any point as reported by dpreview, but some significant potential benefits)
C Fn 8 - ON (It's true that ISO 3200 is just a firmware ISO, but it can still help me have a predictable way to get extra shutter speed if I really really need it... I think I've taken just the one ISO 3200 test shot.
C Fn 12 - Not changed for normal shooting, but I put a little bookmark here so I can find this quickly if I need it and forget.
C Fn 15 - 2 (not really important to others)
I also found it helpful to put a bookmarker at page 64 because I find the Custom WB setting to be a bit more fiddly than my S2
Actually, I have to do it again as I had my camera functions reset when I had to get a bum 50mm tested and swapped for a new one.

I went into Circuit City today, and they've expanded their dSLR section massively. They have thislens on sale. Is this lens any good, or is it a POS? |
