I went out previewing the wedding and reception sites that I have been booked to shoot during the month of May. Since I now have a lightmeter I used it to get an idea of how dark things might be, as in NONE of the upcoming ceremonies can I use flash...not too abnormal really, but i want to be prepared.

One church is gorgeous. the ceremny will be in the chapel - the dark chapel. How dark you ask? Close your eyes. No, it's darker than that. Really. The meter tells me at ISO 1600 and F4 I need to set the shutter at 1/10th of a second. Ummm...that's dark. At ISO 100 the meter was like a second plus! Should be interesting. If I try f2.8 and ISO 3200...I can get 1/40th ... but i'm restricted to the balcony during the service too...at least they let me have a tripod!

the more urban, smaller church is much brighter - ISO 1600 F4 and 1/60. Hey, this one's almost doable! But alas, no flash. Well, actually I'm allowed only 4 or 5 shots during the whole ceremony. Some things can be restaged, but one thing I gotta catch live - this is a chruch in the round - no altar really, just a raised platform in the middle of the room with pews on 3 sides. During the ceremony the wedding party will leave the platform so the dancers can preform. The Mime Dancers - yes, you got that right. Mimes. 2 of them. Live. Dancing too.

Anyone want to assist me on this one? No, I won't pay, but if you can't keep a strait face you pay me. If it helps any, the reception location is a log carbin lodge in a park - very very pretty. I think the mimes are coming too. Perhaps mimes do talk?

And how was your day?

That sucks. I'd say rent a video camera with an f/1.4 lens, and just film the whole thing rather than getting a bunch of shots with motion blur left and right.

Or just use flash anyway and get kicked out, but shoot in burst mode so you get a few shots first.

Or maybe infrared? :D

But I think if you explain to them that you can't really make good images under those conditions, if they want better work they'll move it to a better location.

Hoo boy, that first one sounds like a challenge! Sounds like you have three choices...
- Shoot at f/2, ISO 1600, 1/40s w. 50/1.8... composition presents challenges with the 50/1.8
- Shoot at f/2.8, ISO 3200, 1/40s w. 70-210/2.8... Prolly be relegated to strong NR and/or B+W conversion
- Shoot at f/2.8, ISO 1600, 1/20s w. 70-210/2.8... use tripod or monopod and fire multiple shots to increase hit rate

If I had to shoot this, I think I'd go in with the 70-210 and shoot a mix of ISO 1600 and 3200 shots, perhaps augment with a few 50/1.8 shots.
Darn good thing you have the 30D working for you!

Another thought... rent a 135mm f/2 L.

Don't they make a night vision system for dSLRs yet?
Sure it's green, but if they can colorize planets and solar system things, you can colorize that green into velvia like tones!

Talk about painful...

I'd say the real problem is that the mimes will be dancing, not staying still, you'll have just a few chances where they stop movement to be able to get a shot at 1/40th even.

Sorry, that's not helping...

Did someone say nightvision?
scope with adapter

connects with a standard t-mount, all for less the $200

IR flash??? that's a new one on me. gotta learn at least one new thing a day.

Some days are good, some bad. Today is a good one. I will go and vote all 10s later tonight!

My 300D is sold. paid for too.
I just booked a HS Senior for Friday night.

Possibly some invisible walls could be erected. Since they couldn't see them, the would have to somehow slowly "feel" their way around them before they could get into the full swing of the dance.

i've only seen one / it was old police equip. - sold by a used dealer here (wanted 700$ for it ..!!)
(big old METZ looking device -- bet the people in the pews could hear it recycle ;)
but it would be cool ;)

as far as your problem - try to borrow a 50mm f/1.2

the sony f717 has a nightvision mode - very green and grainy, but can easily be converted to B+W, and I don't think you'll be avoiding grain however you do it. Maybe you could get borrow/hire one of these (or other sonys that have it)
