Don't think your bad, really I mean it. What you see here is the best of the moment. Lets all be glad there is no limit on the size of the recycle bin or we would all be outta business.

Glad to make your day Christine, only telling the truth...some good advice given already, but take an honest look at your pics and straight away you will see one thing that hit me in the face, good all round pics but nearly always dead center subjects, try varying the composition using the techniques already pointed out, in some cases you get away with centered subjects but with others you don't. As long as your eyes are pulled to your subject almost any place can work.
Just look at the portfolios of a few of the greats on this site and you will start to see what good composition is.
It doesn't always bring a ribbon winner as I can testify LOL, but it will certainly up your score average and give you much improved pictures.
Paul.

hi christine-

don't be intimidated at all by the shots that everyone is posting in the challenges. i totally understand where you're coming from. like mk mentioned (thanks mk), i started out scoring really low in the challenges. in my mind, they were perfect, clever, and good technical shots. that was then. since i am about to celebrate my first year at DPC, i had a chance to look back on those first 44 challenge entries. what i saw was a steady improvement as each week passed by. as most know, i experimented a lot trying out new things and stepping out of my comfort zone. some did great but some bombed as well. inspite of that, i just chugged along and learned from folks, studying their photos and seeing if i can recreate them.

i looked at dan's portfolio (graphicfunk), robert's (bear_music), shannon's (scalvert) among others. why? each one had their strong suit of which i wanted to explore. dan is the master of shutter and exposure control. his images are phenomenal. his ideas groundbreaking. robert's images on the other hand focuses more on landscapes, an area that i wasn't familiar with. robert also used to be an architectural photographer i instantly found a "bond" if you will as i am an architect. robert's use of color, his POV, and his professional background are exceptional. shannon is DPC's master of props and creative thinking. no one can argue that fact. he can take the most mundane and boring of challenges and give you an image that'll knock you off your feet. ingenuity is his strength... the master of setups.

i wasn't part of any group prior to DPC. i took the plunge and on my very first challenge, i was thrilled beyond belief to finish 128th out of 132! at least i wasn't the last placed person i thought to myself. there are a lot of "mentors" on DPC. they're everywhere. my advice is for you to look at those who you're most inclined to follow and learn from. my faves list is my source when i started out. one by one, i would study each photographer and see what i can learn from each one. from time to time, some folks email me for advice on how to improve an image. like most, i am more than willing to help out as others had helped me out before. feel free to email me if you want whether if it's how to improve a shot or if you just wanna shoot the breeze ;)

not too long ago, i found a couple of other members to gauge my skills against - jaywalk and DrAchoo. i believe we all started in the Conspiracy challenge. Via the scores we posted on the threads, we started to "compete" against each other, seeing who had the higher score. Unfortunately Jaywalk took a break shortly after that and Achoo and I were left to compete against each other. Slowly but surely, I saw my skills improving. Achoo by far was the better skilled photographer than I so I aimed for him and made him a marked man :) all my entries were to see if i could beat Achoo in a challenge. Then at the start of the year, we both agreed that no entry lower than a 6. We had raised the bar on our challenge entries. I had a few 6s at the time but not as much as he did.

Nowadays, we still gauge against each other but not for 6s anymore. We both challenged each other even more. He owes me a beer for one of my entries breaking our goal of 7.5 in a challenge. When he took some time off for Lent, he emailed me that he was ready to come back. The new challenge? Ribbon in his first 3 entries. He did it in his first challenge back.

just remember, there are a few things that make an image score well on DPC.
- image appeal
- great technicals
- creativity

So the bottom line is, don't feel like you're making feeble attempts at the challenge entries. most of us started on this site with so much room for improvement. and guess what? there's a lot more! I hope i can help in any way ;)

cheers,

rikki

ETA:
BTW, the comment trading works wonders as well. Jimmy (SJCarter) started the trend by posting newly uploaded images. For every comment he received, he would return the same amount and sometimes more. Commenting is the best way to learn from others.

Read what you find here, absorb it, and practice it. I've been here for something like 5 months and I have learned a TON! I've learned far more than my few challenge entries and their scores would point to. I just don't always have the time to put into making a great entry for a challenge, so I pick and choose them as I have time.

If you score poorly, chalk it up as a learning experience and try to get something out of what people say (well, the eloquent ones at least, you can ignore the ones that don't really tell you anything). Either that or just assume if you score poorly, the people that gave you low marks don't know anything! ;-)

It's supposed to be fun to do and fun to learn more, so don't take it so seriously.
