I recently got an old 1990 Rebel (film camera) off e-bay for $23.00. I've quickly learned the definition of viewfinder magnification.

My Digital Rebel's viewfinder is 0.88x which has to be divided by the sensor factor thingy (1.6) - which gives you 0.55x.

My new (old) 1990 Rebel has a 0.75x viewfinder mag. I can't say enough how much better that old crappy film rebel is to look thru. I freakin' hate the digital camera now :(

Anyway, I was looking thru canon's cameras and seems right around 1993 canon decided to change the viewfinders from 0.8 and 0.75 down to 0.7.

Why is this?

Do other camera companies have bigger viewfinder magnifications, or did they all go smaller?

I realize it's not likely anyone's going to have an answer for me. I just think it's absurd that my old 1990 rebel has a bigger viewfinder than the current Canon EOS 1Ds Mark II (or any other Canon on the market film and digital).

i'm guessing because you have more information in the viewfinder, and if it was larger then you'd find your eye wandering around the viewfinder searching for the information you need to see in order to take a picture?

I agree with you, the view finder on my Nikon 8008 film camera is awesome!!! The view finder on my Nikon D70s is micro sized in comparison. I ordered one of these...

and it has helped a little, but it still does not compare to my old film camera.

I feel your pain.

I've been wanting some kind of improvement in my viewfinder as well - I don't have my old SLRs to side by side compare but I have always had a vague feeling that it used to be a lot easier to manually focus.

But is it the size? I have also been reading about focus screens - maybe the theory is that newer bodies have better auto-focus so they come with crappier screens?

I think the reduction in magnification almost surely is due to the amount of additional information displayed, and space constraints within the body. I find the 5D easy to manually focus, with it's 0.71x magnification (stock focusing screen). By contrast, I found the 10D quite difficult.

guess i'll just run right out and get one :)

The 350D viewfinder is very small, an agony for older eyes. That's my only complaint and one good reason I will at some point upgrade to a Canon DSLR that offers a larger option.
