I'm about to go out and take some pics while we still have a few hours daylight.
Now if I happen to get a good shot that I could shoe-horn into the yet to be announced open challenge would I get a DQ for the time on the exif?
Now I know it is morally wrong but I'm sure the challenge date range will still be the same. Not that I will do this but I'm interested to hear some feedback.

I guess that depends on the specs of the challenges when they are posted... my guess is you'll be fine, maybe not.
But hey, go have fun shooting anyway.

I would assume not unless there are extra rules attached allowing it. So just go out and shoot bad photography to get it out of your system. :P

| If the exif is outside the legal times for the challenge, then you will be DQed. We DO take into consideration time zone differences, so that wont save you either. |

Yeah but my guess is when the challenges do get posted they will commence midnight server time.
What I mean is that maybe there would be a window of opportunity for someone to sneak a shot in and still not know what the challenge topic was. Particularly if you live on the other side of the world and had all day to shot something, not that its a big deal because you would have to get real lucky to shoe-horn something good.

We do take into consideration the time zone differences, as I stated before. So it wouldn't work, we'd see that and DQ it. Never underestimate our sneakyness. |

So basically you are asking if we think you should do something morally wrong?

No not at all, I do see it as morally wrong but what I'm trying to say is when the challenges get posted they should have the starting time as of when they get posted so someone could'nt do what I have outlined. Otherwise if someone did enter an image taken at say 1.00 am server time they would have not broken any rules and shouldn't be DQed.

The time of your photo is based on server time. Your EXIF must reflect a photo taken within the challenge time parameters, including any time adjustment for your location. Date alone is not enough ...
Why would you be interested in finding out whether it's possible to cheat? |

I think what Tim is trying to say is this. I will use my time since I'm on the same time as the server.
Normally the two exclusive challenges are posted @ 00:00:01 Wednesday morning. As of 05:02:00 they are not posted. If I was to go out and shoot a picture right now and it just happens to meet the challenge could I enter it. Because when the challenges are posted it should say that your picture should be taken between Wednesday, May, 3rd and Tuesday midnight, May, 9th. My picture would have been taken May 3, 2006 @ 05:02 am.

So your calling it cheating now. I have asked questions on an abnormality I have discovered on the site and you are asking me as an accusation why I would want to know about cheating!!
I donât like the term cheat or the manner you have used it I would have thought as a SC you would have said âHey thanks Tim we never saw this problem before we will see to it and fix itâ
Putting that aside the problem is still there if the challenge begins at midnight that anyone could have taken a shot before the challenge is announced.

I remember when the naturally framed challenge was announced very late in the day, after 11am UK time. I was going out to a vintage car rally that day and was desperately waiting for the new challenge. In the end i went without knowing the challenge and about 2 hours later got this
For all i know it may have been taken before the challenge was announced but still fell within the correct challenge time.
It does annoy me a little when they are so late with the new challenges because here in the UK it`s 10.30 am now and i have a free morning :( |

That's exactly the scenario I was talking about, you better watch out or you may be accused of cheating :)
Great shot by the way.

But had i known what the challenge was i would have done the same shot but got a better angle and won a ribbon :)
Anyway i`m of out now with my dogs and i`m taking my camera to shoot flowers and bugs and if it fits the challenge i will enter it.
Surely in this day of technology the new challenges could be automated.
Tired of waiting i`m of shooting. |
