Creating Art with a Toy Camera
with Aline Smithson
//www.alinesmithson.com
Two Sundays
Sunday, May 7 -- 1-4 pm and Sunday, May 21-- 1-3 pm

This class is meant for those of you interested in an alternative approach to shooting. You'll learn about plastic cameras, such as the Diana and the Holga. You'll hear about the history of the cameras and see contemporary work by photographers using this medium. As a "point-and-shoot" type camera, there are few technical decisions to be made, but important things you need to know to get the best exposure and composition. You'll learn from Aline what film to use, how to alter the camera to get what you want, how to change the size of the negative, what lighting conditions give you the best result, and how to use a flash with the camera. The two-hour critique is scheduled to give you plenty of time to shoot between classes.
workshop fee: $175

The Perfect Composition & Exposure Class
with Julia Dean
Saturday, May 20 -- 9 am-5 pm
This one-day workshop is for intermediate photographers who want to get a better grasp of how to expose film or digital correctly in various lighting situations. The lecture will incorporate the zone system of exposure, the difference between exposing with negative film versus positive film, how to rate the film and when and why to change the ISO with both a film and digital camera. The class will discuss what makes good composition, followed by a specific shooting assignment to incorporate what has been learned. Whether shooting film or digital, students will be given a specific number of frames to shoot, making participants think (and see) before shooting. The film will be processed at a one-hour lab and and reviewed at the end of day on a Fotovix machine that allows negatives to be viewed as positives on a TV screen. Thus every frame shot is critiqued, giving each student feedback on the entire roll. Not only will this save students money, but the editing process is a good way to see and understand what makes a good photograph. Those shooting digital will hook up a digital projector for critique, also allowing every frame to be reviewed.
workshop fee: $275 + lab fee

Studio Portrait & Location Lighting
with Harold Sweet
Manager of the Rental Department at Samy's Camera
Tuesday evenings -- 7-10 pm
May 30 -- July 11
(with July 4th break)

Harold Sweet brings 30 years of experience to this six-week course on portrait lighting, a class designed to take the mystery out of using flash and studio strobes. In each class, there is a mix of hands-on experience and lectures on technical information to give participants a solid base so they may support their own creative journey. Students will learn what makes flash such a unique form of light, and how to control it for all situations. Harold begins with exposure basics and traditional lighting set-ups to teach students the best looks for portraiture. Then he builds upon that with the rules of lighting, such as the Inverse Square Law, using ratios for multiple lighting set-ups, and how to explore fill techniques. Harold then applies these techniques to balancing ambient light sources, such as the sun, for natural outdoor fill flash photography, as well as continuous sources for studio and night photos.
Harold also covers how to control natural light situations and how to pack for a location shoot. (This has proven to be a very popular segment of this course!) Students are encouraged to bring their own cameras to shoot in class. Throughout the course, Harold brings in several different lighting systems, as well as medium format cameras with Polaroid backs.
workshop fee: $600

(Fee includes tuition and rental equipment for class demonstration, along with gifts from Eastman Kodak and special discounts from Samy's Camera for rentals.)
Maximum enrollment: 8 students
