hey i now have a nikon d70s, but im thinking of upgrading to a canon 30d, i think this is the newest one out.
I have checked on d preview and read the specs.
But is there anybody on here who can give me a bit more information on the 30d. Does it take a better pics, is it easier to use? etc
Thanks and yes i have also done a search |

as you can see i have the 20d.
they are basically the same camera body and it is nice to hold. maybe not as comfy as your d70 is though. i had one of them before i got my 20d and the nikon is more pleasant to hold. i have not had any problems holding my 20d though it feels really nice in my hands.
30d has some great additions, just not enough to compensate for the loss of an upgrade (unless i got a real deal).
one cool difference is the 5fps versus the 3fps of your d70. that may sound neglible but in fact is really cool. unless of course you dont use it.

Real cool upgrade:
A 2.5" LCD screen

the 30d ahs a spot meter, which i dont (and you are probably take for ganted). it has a rgb histogram. 5fps or 3 fps continuous, and that 2.5" lcd. that is pretty cool stuff.
some other minor "upgrades" like iso in thirds rather than full, though i am unsure i would really want that. didnt use it much on the d70. in fact i think i turned it off and went to only using the full iso stops.
iso in the viewfinder but i dont think k all the time only when you request it.
oh yeah, and that direct print button. lol

It has piture styles like in the 5D vs the parameters in the 20D and ISO in the veiwfinder i hate how the 20D doesnt have that. Also off memory it is switchable from either 1 shot, 3 fps and 5fps
check out this

From the spec, the ISO is in the viewfinder only when it's being changed. You'll see it if you change it while looking through the viewfinder. |

To try an answer your questions:
Does it take a better pics NO that is the photographer
is it easier to use Not sure. I just got mine a few days ago and never used the 20D to be able to compare it.

How come you're thinking of Canon and not considering a D200? or a Pentax, Olympus, of Fuji DSLR?

not as noisy on higher ISO settings, more FPS - so it may just take better pics, or let you get them when you otherwise couldn't.
As for easier to use - real hard to say on that. Depends on what settings you need to change and how often/fast you need to do it. Other than that, you get used to whatever you use and soon you can change ISO/WB/mode, drive, etc without looking. pretty easy IMO.

so all together it is worth me spending the extra $200 and get the 30d.
Why i ain't looking at other camreas is my friend has a 20d. I have found that the pic quality off the cam is alot better then my quality off my d70s. And i know how to use it.
i have taken the same pics with his 20d and my d70, and the 20d pics turn out so much better way more colour, looks better and dosn't need a shit load of editing to make it look the same. Does anybody else think the same.
Anyways guys thanks for all the help. Wil most probably go the 30d now spose it is worth it.
And final question is. Do u think the 30d is alot better then the d70s? |

the 30D is a generation newer than than the D70. It's difficult cause Nikon and Canon keep their products just enough different it's hard to compare apples to apples.
Teo more things in the 30D that are better than the 20D - longer shutter life (100k cycles) and longer battery life. I have a 30D that is just about at 900 shots - still on the first batttery charge. The 20D and my rebel got 300 to 500 or so on a charge. At 900 shots the battery meter still reads all bars...i've heard of people gettgin 1700 shots on a charge.

Wow, I didn't know about the battery being THAT good! I too have noticed that my battery bar is still full after around 700-800 shots.
I charged it once after 100 shots though because I wasn't really sure (and I had been doing a lot of playing around with AF and lenses without taking pictures).
It's not getting charged again for a while though I'm sure...
As far as the D70s being a worse camera, I'd say that the difference isn't all that huge.
When you refer to shots taken with your D70 vs the 20D, were you both using RAW?
The CMOS sensor in the Canon is better in many ways, it's true, but it's tough to say that the difference is really all that huge. I see a lot of really nice pics coming out of D70 cams. Lots of saturation...
If you make up your mind though, that's fine. The good news is that switching to equivalent Canon gear will probably not cost you all that much because the lenses and things are cheaper.
Some things that I wish the Canon had that the D70 has include their treatment of flashes, particularly the wireless controller ability and does the D70 have a wireless remote ability?
I got a wireless remote yesterday that cost me 80 bucks, but it's external to the camera, so it's a bit fiddly.
