Just read some of my comments on my image in one of the challenges. Some of the comments suggested I staged a shot, and it is definitely "not" staged. An oppurtunity for a shot came up and I took it, the subject was as it is. It really is sad because the comments said it is a good shot, I am in the low 4's because some believe it is staged. Upsetting to say the least. I can see how the viewer could assume it is staged. Point being, I judge on what I see, not what I "think" may have been done, because I could be wrong, as in this case. |

But if it looks staged to them, then that's what they do see. That it's not what you see, or what you want them to see, is useful feedback on the way your photo comes across to others.
Unless you typically post an explanation of the backstory and technique on a card next to every picture you show someone, they will alway get whatever they get out of the image, and likely no two will get the same thing.

The general has a great point. Our individual perception is our individual reality.

I'd have to agree with GnerealE. The viewing of any photo is based on certain assumptions.
You as the photographer have to fill those holes to force the viewer to see what you saw (or visioned).
I assume you are talking about the photojournalism challenge. The viewers are perhaps harder than the general readership of a daily or weekly paper that generally expect the photo to be real. BTW, they tend to be geared to be understandable at a 9th grade education level.
Here, the voters are quite a bit more suspicious about photos and more educated overall.
