You said you were going to give away the copyright when you made a verbal agreement to shoot the wedding up there for $1500 and travel expenses. Read again what you agreed to.

I'd tell you what to go do, but it's not physically possible unless you are abnormally flexible.

There are actually quit a few photographers that advertise on Craig's list here in Portland that will do wedding cheaply and provide CD's afterwards. I'm not sure if they also provide a unlimited use letter or sign over the copyright though. But I suspect for the prices they say they will do a wedding, that for a little more, they probably will. Some of these people are obviously amatures trying to get into the wedding business, some are just trying to earn extra money and some are fairly talented and from their portfolios, do a pretty good job.
Here is a link to the Portland Craig's List: //portland.craigslist.org/
Just go down to services and event to get an idea.
Of course the more expensive wedding photographers really don't like these people and are always posting messages trying to scare people off or leaving very degrading remarks about them. I guess most of these people (if they really are successful wedding photographers) have forgotten how they started out in the wedding business. Plus, they seem to over look that if anyone is looking for a wedding photographer on Craig's list, then they either can't afford a $5k+ wedding photographer (or a $2K or even a $1K) or else wedding pictures are not high on their priority list.
Good luck to your friends. There are a LOT of photographes in the Portland area. I'm sure several candidates can be found to choose from. And Portland is a great place to get married in.
Mike

I might be interested, depending on the couple and a few other factors. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

Hmmm..it's all in the details.
I shoot RAW at weddings in RAW - They can have the JPGs, full res, no problem. They can have the right to use them as they see fit, short of commercial uses. I'd prefer they don't edit the living sh*t out of them, but there's no stopping that I suppose.
As to the verbal agreement - got a tape recording of that? I don't remember speaking to anyone. Oh, man, there's those details again. LOL

NEVER assume a 'standard wedding'! NO two are ever alike. Of my next 2 - no garter, no bouquet toss. On one, the WHOLE 'audience' will get up in the front of the church and sing the congregration's 'song'. And they have 3 ministers officiating. Not standard IMO. Should be interesting though. Oh, yeah, in addition to a soloist, they have 2 folks gonna dance on teh altar. Yep. That's what they told me. And no cake.
My July 1 wedding is medeivel themed...chainmail, armor...again, no bouquet, no garter. Theatre folks...marriage will be in a theatre, on stage. Standard, yeah, right. LOL |
Maybe they've both hired you just to keep the oddball theme going :)

Very possibly! I've discovered a few things about the low end (pricewise) of wedding photography.
-you get unattractive wedding locations - as in churches, reception halls , etc.
-no limos
-second marriages - so no young brides, bridesmaids are all their kids (no referrals there, at leat for years)
- people that don't value photography very highly, so you get less 'cooperation' and less input on what they want, cause they don't know what they want.
-younger poorer brides. One of my upcoming jobs the bride is still in HS. Yep. Hubby to be is in the AirForce (a year older) and they're getting married while he's home on leave.
It certainly is not boring!

Heck, unless they are celebrites or famous or a member of the Gates family they can have full use of all the photos I would take for them. Copy to CD / DVD, no prints to worry about, in fact they can have them in the original RAW format and they can convert them to TIFF or JPG and make as many copies as they like. AND they can do whatever they want with them. Only thing I ask as far as the photos go is a full release of liability or responsibility and the right to use them commericially or as marketing just as they have the right to do the same thing. Any commercial use must be in good taste, approved by me and have approriate photog credit whenever used. Easy, yup. A one time out of state venture. Now they can get on with their marriage without the worry of photos ;)

I don't understand? - The first post quotes this .....
"..His main concern is that they (he and wife to be) own the copyright..."
If they own the copyright then you get no say in what happens to them or how they are used. |
