YOu need big bucks and lots of assets. An empty dealership here was going for 2.3 millon 7 years ago (i worked for a guy that was interested in buying the place for a motorcycle dealership). I know from my motorcycle dealership time (11 years) you must have assets, credit and cash. To do a car dealerhip i would image $5 million as a minimum.
It's probably easier and better to buy an established dealership - you have a history of income, profit etc - do nothing and you'll probably be fine.
To start from scratch is going to be difficult - you need to find an open territory for the brand you want to sell.
YOu can of course start selling used cars, in your front yard if need be. it varies by state, but I know in PA you need a license to sell cars, and business licences, etc.

Why A car dealer? Like to sell them or actually own the dealership? |

Just sell cars, not own the dealership. I think it would be fun. Maybe Im mistaken. But as far as jobs go, I dont think it would be that bad.

2 of my friends are car salesmen.
I would suggest having some money saved up in the bank first.
Some weeks they do great, but they can also go 2-3 weeks in a row and not make hardly any money. |

I worked in the motor trade for nearly 7 years, I never sold cars, just aftersales work, but I did learn that you need the goft of the gab (be able to talk alot), but you do need to know your product, there is nothing worse than hearing a salesman blatently lie to a punter. (not saying you would)
Get some experiance working in someone elses dealership cus it is quite hard work you have to sell to keep the job, no sales - no job, one dealership i worked for was like that, we went through 20 salesmen in 3 months.
I wish you all the best of luck you will need it, it is a tough game.

Most of the time a car salesman is waiting around for a customer. boooring!
How hard can it be getting a car sales job, the dealers around here have almost on entire new crew every 30 days. |

I've been in the business for 14 years...started out selling cars. Became a sales mgr., internet mgr. and then a finance mgr. I've been a new car mgr., used car mgr. and a finance director. I currently have the best job ever, which is a finance mgr. at an RV dealership. I've been here for 3 years. If you have the opportunity try an RV dealership. |

I would think if you sit around and wait for walk-in's, it would be boring, and not very profitable. I would think you would have to do some personal marketing on your own in order to get customers to come in and automatically ask for YOU. I could be wrong, but if I was going to do that, I would have to go with the personal marketing approach, which I would think you would spend your own money on that. I could be wrong. |
