Hi all,
I have a Canon PowerShot S1 IS for almost 2 years, and now I've decided to take the step into digital reflex photography.
My choice is the Digital Rebel XT, but I'm wondering what lens I should choose? Is the kit lens good enough? Samy's has got a interesting bundle with the 17-85mm IS so maybe I should check this out, too (//www.samys.com/product.php?ItemNo=CANO0209B006).
I will shoot mostly portraits and animals, and I'm a beginner at using SLR cameras. So I'm searching for a versatile and not-too-expensive lens (under 400$).
Or maybe I should consider buying two lenses? One "normal"(50mm) like the kit lens + a telephoto?
Thank for giving advice, I'm a bit lost 'cause it's first time I have to choose lenses.

I love Tamron lenses, and they are great for beginners and pros alike... All glass optics and superior quality comparable to any of the name brands, in my opinion. I have the 28-300mm one they make which cost me about $500.00 brand new... But for me, I didn't want to keep changing lenses for different shots so this is perfect. Granted at 3.5-6.3 it's a bit slow, it still works just fine for me. Oh, all of their lenses have a 6-year warrenty on them as well... It doesn't matter what happens to them, send it back and they provide a new one. Hope this helps.

Haven't got it, but have heard wonderful things about the 50 mm f1.8 11 for portraits. Not sure what 2nd lens to recommend though.
Have fun with the 350X!! |

OK thanks for the advices.
After thoughts, the 17-85mm seems a good walk-around lens but is a bit too expensive for me. If I buy this one I wouldn't have any money left for a good telephoto lens (which I want).
So my decision for now is to stick with the kit lens and buy a Canon 70-300mm IS USM for zoom. And I'll probably get the 50/1.8 lens for portraits too, thanks to its low price.
When I'll have more money I'll probably get a walk-around lens in the 20-100 range (hope someday Canon will release a IS USM one).

You went almost exactly the route I went, cept I bought the Sigma 70-300mm APO DG Macro where you want the Canon.
You can't go wrong!
Thing is now, I want to replace my kit lens with the 17-85mm...

Tamron SP 24-135 3.5-5.6 about $400
Fantastic lens, super sharp and great range, does macro too. Perfect for studio and general walkaround use.
on the //www.fredmiranda.com review forums it is one of the highest rated lenses of ALL lenses.

They have one - the 24-105 - it's cheap at $1150 so get me one too LOL

Save your money, get the body with the kit lens. Learn how to use your camera and be comfortable with it. You can always get new lenses later on when your needs grow. No point in sinking money into lenses you might not need now. The beauty of SLR's is the flexibility...you add lenses as your needs and skills grow... |

For portraits, you can't beat the 50mm f/1.8 II (well, the 50mm 1.4, but it's more expensive). You can't beat a quality prime for portraits.

Thanks all.
I guess I'll go with the advice of doctornick. No need to spend too much money now. When the time will come I will decide on the right walk-around lens for me, will it be the tamron, canon 17-85, canon 24-102=5 (not cheap ;P) or any other one. Or maybe I will realize that I don't really need this kind of lens, who knows? |
