| Last night a friend of mine received a phone call aroun 3 am and the person on the other line was very hostile and derogatory and would not reveal their identity. So, I was wondering if anybody here had opinions on how to handle this or even if there is anything to do. The number was not blocked but is an exchange within our area code with which I am not familiar. |

If you have a record of the number you can try a reverse look up at 411.com or similar phone directory sites--that way you might find out who/where it's coming from.
I do not suggest you call them back! Instead start writing down the times of the calls and note something of what they say.
For awhile I was receiving nasty, threatening calls from someone who got stoned nearly every night...they didn't want "me" they thought they were calling someone else. I'd tell them that they had the wrong number and they'd argue with me! (How do you know I have the wrong number!?) It would have been funny and only mildly annoying if the caller weren't so persistent. I alerted my phone company (who could do little but log the event in case it got worse). After a few weeks of logging times the calls were received I called the police who investigated. That was the end of it...never found out who it was or why they had been insistent in calling my number, but it did stop...mysteriously. |

3am. My guess is drunk & dialed the wrong number. Unless it happens repeatedly I wouldn't worry about it.

If you recieve additional calls, I'd follow the procedure that KaDi outlined. Call the phone company and have them document the calls. Easy, since you have the number. If the calls persist, contact the police and let them handle it.
If the number is listed in public directories, a reverse lookup will be successful, but I's strongly discourage any direct contact.
