This is a pretty basic question.

I have a 52 size filter to use on a 58 size lens. Step down ring is my solution right? Is there any drawbacks to step down rings? Pretty much tell me what you know of step down rings.

Thanks.

I did not realize they even made such a thing. With a 52mm filter on a 58mm lens, the obvious blocking of light would be a concern.

I thought those worked only the other way around - like using a 58 filter on a 52 lens?

nope, they make step up and step down rings.

There are step-down rings, but they are not a good idea, for obvious reasons.

FWIW, I buy all my filters in a large 77mm size and use step-up rings to adapt them to all my lenses. No fear of vignetting that way, even with several filters on the lens.

It'll work a lot of the time on a dSLR with a full frame lens. I use a 77-58mm step down ring on my Tamron 19-35 with no vignetting at all.
