While there are those on the site that would prefer I keep my comments to myself, I enjoy commenting on photos and really appreciate those who comment on mine. As well, I feel that I learn a lot when I receive polite and instructive comments, and I've got an idea that might help that along.
I propose to form a group of ten photographers. These ten photographers will commit to the following:
1) Comment on every photo that the other 9 photographers enter into a challenge, even if they enter two challenges weekly. Extra challenges would be voluntary.
2) All comments will be a minimum of 20 words, just as a general guideline.
3) All comments will be polite and instructive. "Nice shot" and "this sucks" will not be acceptable. This is a voluntary commitment on the part of the photographers, but failure to comply would be frowned upon.
4) If a photographers no longer chooses to participate, the group may choose to either allow a new signup, or simply continue without the original photographer. Missing a week or even two due to vacation or sickness or something else unavoidable will not require "withdrawing"; the intent is to act in a common sense fashion.
5) This commitment will continue indefinitely until terminated by the members of the group.
6) All photographers will enter at least one challenge every week. Again, common sense will prevail here, and no one will be "thrown out", but the purpose is to encourage participation and learning.
This is open to high scoring photographers, this is open to low scoring photographers, and it's even open to middling photographers. This is open to veterans and short-timers, but I would prefers photographers with at least 10 challenge entries.
If more than 10 people are interested, they will be encouraged to form additional groups.
Any interest? I've got two folks that I'm reserving spots for if they are interested, but the other 7 slots are open...
While this was obvious in my brain, I didn't say it... The intention for this would be to comment AFTER the challenge voting is complete so that the participants photos can be identified from their profile page. This is NOT in any way an attempt to influence voting, nor should photos be identified to other group members before voting is complete. Doing so WOULD result in an automatic dismissal from the group.

I'd like a spot. This is exactly why I am on DPC. Thanks for the excellent idea.

Doesn't sound like this is open to people who don't consistently submit a photo every week.
How about getting 10 people to join the Critique Club? Only requirement for that is that you ask to join! |

If you don't like the concept, you are welcome to pursue other interests. I have particular reasons for proposing what I have proposed, and 10 new CC members does nothing for me. I don't request Critiques.
Didn't mean to sound like a jerk.

If you don't consistently submit to challenges, what would keep you critiquing others's shots? I think the 6 conditions are exactly what's needed.

I think this is a great idea. I have only been here a short time but have learned tons. I am in the process of adjusting how I score and I have been trying to leave more comments - detailed comments - getting past the nice shot type comments. As much as I like "nice shot" comments I really prefer ones that critique - so I am trying to give more critiqueing (sp?) type comments myself.
So sign me up and thanks for the invite Nards. I will try my best to submit one a week. Of course that won't always be possible for me but not because of a lack of desire. I enjoyed going back and commenting on the middling masses and I am a bit bummed to have my average crepp up just enough to not get back into that group. This league of death that I signed up for is just a tad bit out of my range (just a tad).
Great idea and looking forward to participating.
Edit - As far as the CC goes - I do submit with that box checked off but the percentage of critques from CC compared to reqeusts is fairly low. This is a guaranteed critique and not just a comment. Again - great idea.

There's gotta be more. COme on...ten weekly critiques...you can do it.

These don't have to be extensive, full-blown "Greetings from the Critique Club" comments. Simply a two or three sentence analysis of the picture.
Perhaps it's a solution in search of a problem... |

I'll participate. I do try to comment more than just "nice shot", and I try to comment on 20% of challenge entries when I vote (which can be tough in the very large challenges!). I do have to admit that on really good pictures, I often don't comment at all, or leave the dreaded "nice shot", simply because I don't feel there's anything more I can offer.
If you're willing to have me, I'll do my best to keep up! |

Okay, there goes the spot that was reserved for Melethia. That's four.
The whole idea here is to have some "insurance" that we'll get at least 8 or 9 constructive comments on any photo we enter. Not trying to be exclusionist, but just trying to keep the group size reasonable. I hope for ten, but I still like the idea even if only 4 or 5 of us do it.
So, thanks to you guys and gal for jumping on board. Others are welcome. I'm going to make it a point to comment on your entries from last week if possible.
What I'm doing is adding all the "members" to my favorites list so it's easy to visit your profiles and see your recent entries.
Melethia, you got a special invite because you started the Middling Masses Massacre in the interest of getting comments for the middle of the road people, so I wanted to "reward" you for that. Thanks. It was really great getting comments after the voting. |

can i join?
pleeeeeeeaasee
been trying to get round to more CC activity, but this would force me to critique. And obviously I need all the help I can get with my photos :P
edit: can't promise to enter EVERY week, but try my best - I'd commit to commenting though regardless

I'd like to join, I can comment every week, but I can't promise to enter the challenges every week, I have a buisness to run and that requires me to go out of town to work sometimes, and then I have no time to photograph...
but if that's ok then I'm game ;)

I was hoping this could also encourage us all to participate as regularly as possible, but the ultimate purpose was to generate feedback. Obviously, you won't get as much feedback if you don't enter as those that do, so you'll kind of be "giving" more than you're "getting". I'll be glad to have you on board, though, just with the knowledge that I'll encourage you to submit as often as you can.
That's six! Welcome aboard :) |

A suggestion:
after each challenge, each of you post the thumbnail link for your photo in the same (resurrected) thread.
That way each participant has an easier job finding everybody's photos, plus other people might feel moved to comment as well (seeing how you obviously WANT comments). |

have not reached my tenth challenge yet but would be interested in a spot ifn you would not mind too much.
on the lower end of the scoring and would like to find out why. also i dont mind giving a bit of a critique (though i would not pull punches) but find it difficult to approach people and tell them thier photo sucks.... when mine is rated lower than theirs. lol.
thanx

I would be up for this, if you'll have me. I need to learn to comment more anyway and would be more honest knowing that people actually want the honest feedback and not only what's positive about their photos. |

I have the requisite 10+ challenge entries and I certainly meet the definition of "middling" or even "lower" photographer, so I would love to be added to the list if you have room. I am on this site all the time, so the time commitment won't be a problem. |

Just a though - I know some folks have said that they may not enter every week. Since I foolishly decided to join in on one of the WPL teams, I MUST submit every week AND must try to do my best, or I'll feel I've "let my team down". My score has only counted once, and that was the week that Librodo had that National Geographic portrait.... so.... But the point (and the reason I think Bernard put it in the guidelines) is that by entering once a week, you really do spend some time thinking about a shot to get, getting the shot, and processing the shot.
All that being said, I've shot NOTHING this week. I have tomorrow. Just a WEE bit of pressure.... :-)
Should be fun! |
