Now that the "Complementary Colors" challenge is in the voting stage it is of interest to note that there are two types of complimentary colors.
There is the 'traditional' ones defined for the challenge and there are the image processing ones used for color correction. They are completely different. The second type is of more interest when post processing images and you want to make color corrections.
The "other" complimentary colors used for post processing are:
1-Red/Cyan
2-Green/Magenta
3-Blue/Yellow
That is, if you need to color correct for a red color cast in an image you increase the amount of cyan in "Red" using "Selective Color". If you need to correct a "green" color cast then you add "magenta" and if you need to correct a "blue" cast then you add "yellow". You may do the opposite if you are after artistic goals for "warming" (adding more red) or "cooling" (adding more blue) to an image.
Another color cast correction technique is to increase or decrease the specific color with a "Hue/Saturation" saturation adjustment.

Ahh ... a comlimentary color is one which goes well with your complexion and hair color.
A complementary color is one on the opposite side of the color wheel from where you start.

Shouldn't this wait until voting is over? Wouldn't want to influence or sway voters in any way. ;^) |
