This challenge couldn't have come at a better time, got my media pass from the australian journalists association in yesterdays mail.

Here is a tip for you. Get a local newspaper and pick an article that was done locally that DID NOT run a photo. Every paper has them due to space restrictions and staff issues. Go out and shoot a photo for that story. Thats what I did to build a portfolio to show my editor. Enjoy it's lots of fun.

Great idea, I might try that.

How did you go about getting that?

you need to contact the media entertainment & arts alliance, I just told them I'm a freelance photographer and requested the media pass, you must ask for it or they just send a standard membership card without a photo. If you want any more info like phone numbers ect. PM me.

So how many of my fellow Aussies managed to capture evocative images for this challenge at this mornings ANZAC day dawn services?

Q.

Yep got up at 4.00am, got wet, got some great shots but I don't think I'll use them here. Not the right audience.

Funny you say that. As soon as I saw this challenge I thought about ANZAC Day, but for some reason I just didn't feel right about shooting a service. Can't really explain why - maybe I felt like I'd've been intruding for the sake of entering a trivial competition. I dunno, but in the end I didn't do it.

I didn't do the service, although i was up, but i just come back from photographing the celebrations at 'Two-up' at our local RSL Club, now that was a blast, so funny to see the people frozen in their different positions as they throw up the coins..lol....

I share your doubts. I mean, is photojournalism the same as "shooting for newspapers"? Around here, the local paper runs all sorts of "local color" shots on the front page, and there's really no local "breaking news" that would make anyone sit up and take notice. Are the voters going to score shots on how "newsworthy" they are? I don't have a clue...

the rub, as always, is how an image is perceived by the dpc masses that vote (which are not always forum participants). my guess is that a story-telling photo will do well. not necessarily a candid, but a shot of a person that captures the essence of the story.

one of the greatest compliments i've ever heard a photographer say about another photographer was, "his images captioned themselves."

so, bear, rather than shooting the dinghey, shoot the guys pulling it in or pushing it out. or, rather than shooting the boats at the pier, shoot them being unloaded...

and, to further round it out, here are two actual "front page" photos that highlight the point that front page could mean many different things, depending on what you're used to seeing.

yep, this is a challenge ;-)

I think both tell a storey and woulf fit this challenge. The first one is funny tho cuz it was a new house and the pumpcrete truck collapsed into the house. Kinda dark but funny none the less.

There was something going on in Dayton, VA today. I didn't even know until I got down there. There was even a photographer from the AP there. I got one shot that I'm hoping will be really good. Plus, the event is moving from Dayton to downtown Harrisonburg this evening. So, I got permission from my boss to forward the hotline phones to my cell phones, so I can go take pictures. Where I work is less than a block from where the event will be. That's why my boss said I can do that. Here's hoping the residents don't set off the fire alarms again.

I was driving a Mini Bus and it came over the local Radio Station that there was a huge Fire and 5 Fire Engines were at the scene.
NOW that would have been photo journalism, but I never had a camera with me so I didnt go !

The tornadoes in Oklahoma were within 7 miles of me and I couldn't get off my lazy a$$ to go shoot them. ( I also didn't to want to leave the wife and pets alone.) Would that have counted? :-)

edit: close parenthesis

Well, my entry better do well considering I had a local tv station and the paper crawling all over me to get it from me.

Oh yeah, I'm gonna be on t.v. tonight as the aspiring photojournalist who happened to follow a cop.

hi,
considering the challenge description "Put yourself in the shoes of a magazine or newspaper photographer and try to capture a shot worthy of the front page."
... i'm 100% sure that photos that have no "NEWS" effect in them will probably go below 5.0 which is absurd, the challenge description clearly says magazine or newspaper ... so magazine photos will probably be voted DNMC by large number of voter, maybe :-)

just my opinion

How's that for proof?

It's not a great shot, but I figured it would score at least 5.0. At least the comment was helpful. Live and learn!
