I'm a little lost on this challenge. What makes a good "photojournalism" shot? I know what photojournalism is, but I'm having a hard time coming up with ideas for picture, or even what to base votes on. I've looked through the first PJ challenge, and couldn't find any specific 'theme' as to why some pictures did well and others didn't. What would cause voters to make the DNMC claim, for instance? Like, kids playing out in the sunshine is fairly newsworthy around here, since we've had endless months of rain, but I'm not sure it would mean much to the average DPC voter. So does the title make the difference? And the real kicker, that I'm struggling with... since I'm mostly confined to my house, and my mini-van for carpool runs... what kind of news can I create? (I guess if I get really desparate I can always run the van into a guardrail or a tree or something... well, maybe that would be taking the hobby a little too far). ARG. This one will definatley be a challenge for me.

I share your doubts. I mean, is photojournalism the same as "shooting for newspapers"? Around here, the local paper runs all sorts of "local color" shots on the front page, and there's really no local "breaking news" that would make anyone sit up and take notice. Are the voters going to score shots on how "newsworthy" they are? I don't have a clue...

I post this site all the time but now seems most appropriate.

Would anyone here at DPC consider Steve McCurry to be a photojournalist?

Much of his work, from what I've seen is not front of the daily news paper type of stuff...but for magazine journals he's one of the best.

My guess is that any simple nicely done Third World picture will win this Challenge and that most fire...car crash...police...protest stuff won't crack the top 5 unless the shot is insanely awesome.

Just a guess but please check out that site...McCurry would Ribbon for sure if he entered.

I assume shooting a sporting event will count.

This says Photojournalism II. Can we see Photojournalism I?

Can't second guess how others would vote but for me, I would probably be looking for a photo that makes me as the viewer go, "Wow, wonder what the story is behind that shot?". And the caption or title would have to address that question by giving me a little more on the subject, reinforcing the visual impact. So, yes, I'd say that the title is probably more important for this challenge than others altho' it shouldn't communicate in place of the photo itself. The examples given on MSNBC picture of the week are pretty good ones.

Photojournalism I

Looking at this a good closeup/candid photo will probably do well.

maybe what this challenge needs is a space for a little 'blurb' that gives the photo meaning... (whatever the one or two sentences are called that go under the photos). While a picture can tell a thousand words, sometimes they make a lot more sense if you know what's going on around the picture.

Wow, really great shots indeed and certainly photojournalism in my book. :) Thanks for sharing. By the way, you have a few interesting ones too like this one.
Now, all that is needed is a title that gives me more on the story behind, not just a description. :)

And this ... You do have some really fascinating shots.

The shelter where I work is not handicapped accessable (very old building). So, we have a client staying at a motel. I had to leave the property to go see about her tonight. So, the people who actually live here at the shelter really wanted to help me out with this challenge. So, they set the fire alarms off, so that when I got back from the motel, the fire department was here! Yay!!!!

Some days I really love my job!!! And, yes, I got my camera out of my car and started shooting.

If you like those...you'll love this. I just shot it 20 minutes ago, handheld with some quick light editing.

Unfortunates, such as the homeless, rarely make it to the status of a news photo, even on the back pages and just about never on the front page. But news magazines do feature this type photo frequently, so IMO they qualify.

This edit should improve my score...

Sudanese Rebels find that smoking excessive amounts of marijuana and practicing Guerilla warfare totally incompatable...

So how many of my fellow Aussies managed to capture evocative images for this challenge at this mornings ANZAC day dawn services?

Q.

You guys wanna know something funny? I gave up photojournalism to bartend, because the money was better and the job was a LOT less stressful. I almost just quit photography all together, because of the stress.

I dunno, I still have near zero interest in it. Think I'll skip this challenge. You guys have fun.

Yep got up at 4.00am, got wet, got some great shots but I don't think I'll use them here. Not the right audience.

Funny you say that. As soon as I saw this challenge I thought about ANZAC Day, but for some reason I just didn't feel right about shooting a service. Can't really explain why - maybe I felt like I'd've been intruding for the sake of entering a trivial competition. I dunno, but in the end I didn't do it.

We didn't do the service but went down to photograph the parade. There were hundreds of photographers with the most unbelievable equipment! The lenses, cameras, etc: Amazing! Oh, photos good too :)

Photojournalism is primarily about story telling with still images. Photojournalism is where you can communicate a story with pictures.

However, it is doubtful DPC voters will distinguish that from telling a "newsworthy" story. Furthermore, in this challenge you will have to communicate a whole story with only one picture.

I'd suggest that you take a GREAT picture that looks like a newsworthy story.

Here is a tip for you. Get a local newspaper and pick an article that was done locally that DID NOT run a photo. Every paper has them due to space restrictions and staff issues. Go out and shoot a photo for that story. Thats what I did to build a portfolio to show my editor. Enjoy it's lots of fun.
