Does anyone knows how to crop portion of the image with certain width and height? I have some pictures need to crop, but I don't want to resize them, I want crop them in the same size let's say 300*300.
I tried to put numbers in width and height column when choosing the crop function, but it does not work. Anyone can help??
thanks |

Begs the question of what software you are working with. |

when you use the crop tool, on the top part of the toolbox, you can set width and height and dpi.
You can put 300 px instead of in for pixels as opposed to inches.

For some strange reason, the crop tool in PS works in a rather unuseful way. When purely cropping, with no rescaling, and to maintain an exact size:
- Select the rectangular selection tool, set it for "fixed size" and set the dimensions to the number of pixels you want.
- Click once approx. where you want the upper left corner to be, and then drag within the selection to move it around.
- Now Image>Crop and you're done.

Oh yeah that too.
Kirbic, how do you rescale a photo? Do you use the crop tool? or do you go to image, resize? Are they really any different? |

This workaround loses the ability to rotate the crop box : (
I guess you can straighten the canvas and then crop ... |

For rescaling, I'm used to just right-clicking the image title bar and selecting Image Size. This dialog is identical to the Image>Image Size dialog and is very powerful.

I did try to do that, but it does not take effect, what's wrong with it?
I've never tried kirbic's way, maybe I should give it a try

Did you hit enter after making the crop selection?

That's the ONE thing that I miss with this method :-P
What's REALLY needed in the crop tool is a way to constrain aspect ratio. With that addition, it would be MUCH more useful.
You can get around the crazy resampling behavior of the crop tool by leaving all the input boxes blank, or you can set dimensions to force it to constrain the aspect ratio, but you can't do both, dang it.

yes, I did.
1.I put the numbers in width and height column, then hit enter.
2. I place my mouse on the picture, left-click and drag, the crop section goes as far as I drag my mouse, it never stop when reach the specific size I state on the width and height column. |

Cola,
I didn't see the "didnt want to resize" part of your message. Musta been sleeping. :p
Bear's method is the one that lets you cut out an exact 300x300 px from your original photo. For a 100% crop. (is that the right term?)
where it says normal, click it to make it say "fixed". Then enter the width and height you want.

It is stopping, though. It is rezing you crop, not matter how much you select, to the size you specify. If you select the entire image, telling it to crop to 30x30 px, it will make your entire image 30x30. Does that make sense?

Make your selection, then hit enter and you should see the resize. Check the image size and you should see that it is the size that you requested.
Edit:
If you want just a specific size without resizing, use Kirbic's way.

That's the problem with the crop tool. You put the size in, but it still lets you drag to any size, then it just takes the selected area and rescales it to your set target size (the numbers you entered). Ack. If you don't want PS to rescale, just clear out the boxes before selecting. That doesn't help when you're trying to constrain size or aspect ratio though.
In order to get it to complete the crop operation, you need to click on the check mark next to the input boxes.
