I was just thinking about something... What if another variable was added to the computation of votes... A variable that takes into consideration both the average vote a person has cast, and the average vote the same person has received. I think this would create a more accurate voting result since it would not simply calculate the vote the person made, but it would take into consideration the skill of the voter [Average votes received] and the impact that their vote could have [average vote given]. Granted, this might make people start giving higher votes to make their votes count more, but I think in the end we would not only receive a more accurate result with respect to the challenge, but a higher moral, if you will, among the participants of this website.
We could even take it one step further to include a variable that takes into account the ratio of comments to votes the person made so that we have an idea that they either are, or are not, going through the voting site just hitting numbers, or if they really are taking the time to process the photo in their minds.
Just a few thoughts... |

Your missing the whole point. When a person is rude, they arent necessarily stating their opinion. They are jsut being mean. So, if a person doesnt like the photo, they can either say nothing or give a suggestion or state why they dont like it..not say 'THAT DESERVES A ZERO" How could taht comment possible do anyone any good? Everyone has opinions, but not everyone is rude. Originally posted by dudephil: Originally posted by karmat:
It is indeed a bit tongue in cheek. I was just trying to point out that we often get upset at "rude" comments, but we really like the gratutious ones. |
You're right. I understand that what I might consider rude someone else might consider helpful. Sure, most people love to hear the praises of their work and I am definitely one of them. Me being an extreme moron and complete amateur (picked my first DSLR up 6-7 months ago), if someone doesn't like what I've done I certainly appreciate a critique and some advice on what I should do differently. However, if someone says, "If there was a 0 button I'd hit it", I can't say that I'd consider that a valuable comment and would probably assume that the person is just being rude. It just seems to me that if an individual can take ten seconds to tell me "your shot sucks", maybe they could take another ten seconds to help me improve on it. Of sourse this is only my opinion and we know what opinions are similar to and can smell like :) |

That comment is rude though. It came from a blind person. lol. Rude wouldve been something like, 'why do u bother". I want truth, good or bad, without rudeness.Originally posted by skiprow: i don't mean to be rude, but sometimes you can't sugar coat the truth. when commenting while voting, i spend more time commenting on bottom-end images than anything else, and for what? some people bomb out so badly that they never enter another challenge--did i help them? some people don't want anything but platitudes--did i help them? some people take the all the suggestions and figure out how to not only make better images, but score well at dpc. that makes it worth the trouble. |

Just consider the source and move on. We all can't be perfect as much as we'd like to think we are. There's nothing we can do about these kind of people... We just have to live with them and not worry about it. |

Some people make rude comments when voting because they get their kicks from being evil, because it's easy to be a big man on the internet, because they aren't interested in sugar coating, because they don't speak English and it comes across wrong, because their mommies never taught them better, because they aren't out to win friends, because they feel insecure about themselves, their lives or their photography, etc. etc. etc.
Why are we surprised that there are rude people in the world? And why are we dwelling on it? It happens everywhere, even in our happy little community. |

Uhhhhh, I don't see where I missed the point. Personally, I think he stated his opinion clearly when he said he'd hit a 0 button if he could. :) Is that a critique? Nope. Is it an opinion? Definitely. Is it rude? Without a doubt.
