It is sad times at the San Diego Wild animal park as Monday one of our recent favorites Koza a 5 month old lion cub had to be put to rest.
Long story short: Koza a twin was delivered by c-section because his mother was having complications during delivery. Koza's brother did not survive the delivery. It took the mother a long time to recover, and when she did she would not acknowledge Koza.
Knowing that the lion cub needed to learn social skills the WAP paired Koza with a Mastiff (they called Cairo) that was rescued from Hurricane Katrina. The two would be in the lion camp romping about regularly.
The WAP staff was slowly re-introducing Koza to the adult lions by letting then smell each other through a fenced barrier. Monday (it is said) that one of the staff inadvertantly removed the barrier, a lioness came through and in three bites Koza sustained un-recoverable injuries to his spinal cord. He was put to sleep.
What makes this difficult for me is that I was there the day prior and watched him playing. Just as happy as can be.
Probably some of the last shots of the cub out in the lion camp area as he went back to the nursery a short time later.
These Pics are pretty much straight from the cam except for a crop, resize and USM... as I am not quite ready to do post p them.
I didn't know that taking photos would have this effect on me....sheesh.

Sad story.
I agree with Little King. My eye went straight to 2762. That shot says it all, to me. |
