Don't get carried away, folks. This is not allowed in basic editing. |
Good point srdanz. It actually starts in Step 5 - changing the Curves adjustment layer's blending mode to Color and the image will combine the color shifts with the image's original luminosity.
Very useful tutorial though. Thanks dleach! |
Changing the blending mode in Basic Editing isn't allowed. |
I don't usually post anymore, but for this one I feel I should because I recently had an image dq'ed for using the adjustment layer "invert" as it does state in basic editing rules.... |
From what I can tell, it looks like your photo was DQ'd because you used a "Burn" blending mode, not for inverting. But I could be wrong.... inverting an image is legal in basic as stated previously as long as it's in "normal" mode.

Adjust levels, by switching the positon of the output level sliders. |
This doesn't seem to work. Elements doesn't let you switch them. |

No, invert is allowed so long as you don't change the blending mode from "normal." |
In elements, the invert doesn't seem to give you and option on what type of blending is done so I assume it is "normal". |

I tried it in elements 3.0 and it worked. When you bring up the levels dialog (Ctrl+L), move the bottom slider's limits. Move the left one to the middle first, then move the right one all the way to the left, and then proceed and move the left one (now in the middle) all the way to the right.
Did this work - what part can't you do?
edit to add: or just type the values 255 and 0 (instead 0 and 255) for the output levels...

Yes, if you simply apply it from the menu up top it will be applied as "normal." However, I strongly suggest applying it as an adjustment layer so you can more easily edit it later. If done as an adjustment layer, you have the option of changing the blending mode of the layer, with the default of "normal" being the only legal mode for basic editing.

Image/Adjust/Curves. move the ends of the line so that the diagonal changes from / to \ viola! |
This method works really well. But to do it you must move the ends vertically, not horizontally to change the line. I tried it on several older pics last night and the results on one was stunning. If the weather is right tomorrow I'm going to reshoot. I see a personal best coming! |

Would like to enter this image, but it's not taken between the dates and i also selectively desaturated parts of it before invert, which as i understand isn't allowed in basic edited, is that right?
What do you think about it?

Kerm,
I believe you can selectively desat colors, but not parts. In other words, you can desaturate red for the entire picture, but you can't select part of the picture and desaturate all colors. Hopefully that makes sense.
As far as the picture you posted, the purple stuff is interesting, but whatever is desaturated on the right takes away from it. If you inverted the entire image it may be more interesting. Perhaps you can crop the right side and see how it looks. |

Can I use Image>Adjust>Invert? I have doubts. SC may please clarify.

Yes, so long as it is applied evenly to the entire image. |

You can definitely use "Image/adjust/invert"; there's absolutely no question about it.

Then which is the second 'invert' that everyone is talking about? Am I missing something? |

I don't think that would do well in the challenge, IMO. Might I suggest more contrast? |

I was just about to say that...
You know, for this challenge at least the comments are going to be interesting!

Your negitive image below would be a great idea (sample), re the "Complimentry" challenge due to the strong color contrast re Blue/Orange as well.

EDIT: I took down my image because i think that it may count as an outtake and would make my entry really obvious once you saw it in voting. But if someone on SC could PM me to see if what i want to do is valid or correct that would be great. If not I'll enter something else.
Would this be acceptable for the negative challenge? not this image but this style. I ask because although i inverted with curves, when i converted to black and white in the channel mixer i ran it through so that the plants had a somewhat more natural feel, being that highlights are somewhat highlights and shadows shadows. It seems to me to have an infared feel to it, but i did do negative processing.

Man, I've got the perfect picture sitting on my hard drive, but I can't use it since I took the original over a month ago. I'll try to recreate it over the weekend of the weather cooperates. Otherwise, I'll post it here and let you all weep for not being able to give it a blue ribbon. d:^) |

Okay, I've got a picture. I don't know how good it is. I'm not even sure how much I like it. I copied my steps as they appeared in my history window, or I wouldn't have a clue what the hell I did to that picture.
Opps.. I've got something I'm going to try and re-create. If I can, I'll substitute it for what I've got in play now.

Probably this thread should have the images removed (including mine), or else it will start to fall under the "no out-takes" guideline and the whole thing will get hidden. |
