Took my comment suggestions from another discussion to make it an official request:

Agreed that getting more submissions is resulting in fewer comments being made.

My suggestions for improvement:

1-Remove the 'helpful' checkbox
People either habitually check it or habitually don't check it rendering it useless. It primarily generates forum complaints.

2-Never require comments during voting under any conditions
This will reduce comments. People, like me, will vote less if required to make comments. Fewer voters, fewer comments.

3-Add checkbox to the submission screen soliciting comments
This requires the photographer to request comments on an image by image basis. When selected a message is displayed on the voting screen showing that comments are being requested by the photographer for that particular image. Those of us that like to give constructive comments would then know the photographer is receptive to them.

Don't add the checkbox to the preferences screen!

It is WAY to easy for someone to make a one time mark on the preferences screen, forget about it and never return to change it. Pretty soon it will show everybody wanting comments and we are right back where we started.

I like the idea of number 3.
So by default, images will not have a comment box.
And please put the checkbox somewhere special in the submission page, because I know most people habitually check all checkboxes when they see it without reading! :p

Guess I might as well pull my comments over as well.

Hey everybody. I think we have an excellent opportunity to direct some change that has been asked for time and time again regarding comments on challenge entries, the choice of the "helpful" checkbox (is it worded correctly, do we need it, do we need more?).

My position is we should give the user the option at time of submitting their challenge photo to choose yes/no on receiving comments. Make this a question that is required (must be answered) to submit your entry.

As for the "helpful" checkbox on comments, I can take it or leave it. If it's left there I would like to be able to access it directly from my Profile page/Comment Received section. When I open the comments received page I should be able to select the helpful checkbox then (as well as on the image page also).

Anyone else have any thoughts/opinions on changes/improvements? ;^)

I'd MUCH rather have fewer voters if it means getting more comments. I am not here to see if I can get a high score. I am here to learn from others, and this is primarily accomplished by their comments on my shots. People running through and just clicking a number is a bag of crap, and if requiring comments makes it stop, GOOD. I do agree that the helpful box is neither here nor there. If we do have to ask for comments, I'd like the box in my profile. I want any and every comment that anyone has to offer. I have not perfected phtography, and comments help make my work better.

I still don't get all the hoopla over comments during voting. I mean really, what's the big deal?

People that want to leave comments are going to, those that don't aren't. If people are forced to leave comments it won't help anybody.

The best feedback, via comments, comes from posting individual photos in a forum thread and asking for feedback.

Leave the voting format alone. Give users an option to opt out/in at time of challenge submission and be done with it. Pretty easy fix really. JMO. ;^)

Ok, then. Let's leave it alone. Add a check box on the profile where you can opt out for good. Those that have mastered the art can check it. Those of us that haven't still appreciate them, both during and after the challenge. I'd still rather have more comments if it meant less votes. Sure it takes more effort to think consider what you're looking at than it does just to arbitrarily click a number, but the site is much better when people are pondering phots. We can train a monkey to click numbers.

Let's not have two concurrent threads arguing about this, okay?

That is so not true. I know I am pretty safe leaving a "great shot", even though not even that is appreciated by everyone.

However, there have been countless times where I wanted to point out something negative, but didn't feel like putting up with the possible abuse for it afterwards.

This one can be locked. It's only purpose is to make an official site suggestion.
