Just read a very in depth article over at hack-a-day about removing the IR filter from the Camera and adding a peltier cooler to keep the sensor cool during long exposures. You have to take apart your camera but thought some people might be interested...

Lots of astrophotographers purchased Rebels solely because this modification is so easy to do. On astromart and other astro buy/sell sites, modified Rebels are available by the ton.
The Rebel is a very capable astro camera, as are may of Canon's other models. The 20Da was released in a factory-modified state. |

| I've heard of removing the IR filter before (although I haven't seen instructions this detailed before). The thing I found really fascinating that I hadn't heard before was the cooler. I know Nikons have been know to show purple banding if the sensor is on too long and it heats up. |
