Ok..I don't have a flash, or any lighting of any sort..and have no plans on becoming a studio photographer.
The talk about Gary Fong's lightsphere has had me thinking maybe i should get a flash and a lightsphere...
Any advice..I looked at a couple of Canon flashes -430ex, and 580ex online, but really don't know what to look for..
My camera plans are to try to do the impossible and get a 30d in a year (this may not happen), and a wide angle lens..(this will happen).
I would appreciate any feedback from all of you techno-experts..thanks in advance.

I am by no means a techno expert but I recently bought the 430EX and love it. You can always use it as a slave if in the future you feel the need for a more expensive one.

Or you can pick up a Sigma EF 500 DG Super which is an excellent flash with lots of features (comparable to the 580ex) for the price of the 420ex at about $150 used.

thanks for the feedback..I would be leary of buying a flash used..thinking it probably has some sort of life span that might be relevant..am I wrong (really I know nothing...what is a slave?)

The slave will come in handy if you need more than one flash. It can be triggered by another flash.

The 430 is only $250 so IMO it is fairly cheap.

I also would be leary of buying used.

I bought a Sunpak 555 used for a little over a hundred bucks. It's a handlemounted, dedicated flash that doesn't support E-TTL unless you buy a module for your camera, so it doesn't set itself automatically.

It's nice though, powerful and you can hold it off to the side to get more even lighting, as well as swivel/bounce/etc if it's on the bracket.

Just a suggestion. The manual power settings might be a little slower to use but they'll teach you a lot about flash exposure.
