Hm.. I don't know much about converters, but from what I've heard the 1.4 has significantly less image degradation, and only costs one stop.
So.... that to say, that if I were to get one, it'd be the 1.4 |

This is what I have heard also. Shutterpug bought a 2x and told me it wasn't worth it.

I am using the 1.4x with my canon 200mm/f2.8 and find it is an awesome combination! I have never used the 2x but I will get one eventually.

I had a 1.4x TC which I used with a 70-200 f/4. The picture quality seemed to be unchanged. I changed that for a 2x and have tried it on a 20-200 f/2.8. The picture quality is most definitely changed. Quite a bit softer, but far from unusable, given the number of times I use it.
Bear in mind, also, that you'd get an effective max aperture of f/8 at 400mm with the 100-400 using a 1.4 and f/11 using a 2x. With your camera, you should still get autofocus at f/8, but most probably not at f/11.

The Canon 2x is in my book listed as a not recommended purchase. L prices, but it doesn't have the performance.
Another one to check out might be the Kenko 300 which I believe is a 2x TC. I've been using it a bit with my 80-200 f/2.8L on a friend's camera and it looks fantastic. I don't know how, but it seems as though I am able to shoot f/4.0? I wish I had time to play around with that some more to check it out. That would seem to indicate that either the camera gets confused about the aperture or that the TC only drops one stop.
I started a thread to ask about how this compares to the other TC's and the 1.4x, but I received no replies.
As far as I can tell, the Kenko and the Canon 1.4x are neck in neck.
Incidentally, the Canon TC's are not supposed to be able to work with the 80-200. Easy choice for me. |
