Going to Vegas next month, wanted to know what everyone thinks would be my best walk around lens choice based on my profile.
I do have a Canon Powershot pro-1 I could drag around, but I really would like to use my 5-D. I'm just not sure any of the lenses are suitable for all purpose shots. I wish I had something like a 24-70.
Any comments welcomed. |

Well I would have loved to have your 85mm f/1.8 USM lens when I was in Vegas.
ETA: that lens should be great for indoor shots (losts of nice things to shoot but a little dark) and the fact that there are so many people in the background the better bokeh you can achieve the better.

Kelly, when I was in Vegas, I ended up using my 10-22 for most of the photos of the Strip.
Only when we went to Hoover Dam and Red Rock Canyon did I need others. |

I'm not sure how the 85 1.8 performs on the 5d but i would def. take that lens.
also a fast very inexpensive lens that mght be good is the 50 1.8
again you have to take into consideration the fact that the 5d sensor is awsome and the 50 and 85 may not perform so well on it.

A fast lens probly is your best choice IMO. It will be flexable during the daytime, and will be extreamly useful indoors and in the evening.
I wouldn't get anything less than a 1.4f due to dof issues, and nothing slower than a 2.8f due to lack of light issues.
You pick the optics.

Considering the venue you are visiting, I have to agree with Beetle that the 10-22 would in all likelyhood be the best lens for the Las Vegas strip, if you had one.
Based on your profile, I would think the 17-40mm would be your best bet... if you bring a tripod.

Ray, she's shooting with a 5D; the 17-40 is almost as wide as the 10-22 is on the 20D, and anyway the 10-22 won't work on the 5D. Kel, for SURE your 17-40 is your best walkaround lens for Vegas; wide is God in Vegas. It might give you handholding problems at night, but the 5D is really good at high ISO so...

Thanks guys. I am going to try and get away from my portraiture tendencies there and zoom out a little. Although I am hoping to photograph people as well. I know cameras wont be allowed in the casinos (atleast not in use) so I am not overly concerned about indoor photography. Just want to get some Bellagio water action and some good candids and possible abstracts. |

Definitly the 17-40 during the day--you'll have lots of light.
But it seems you have a great excuse to add another lens, like the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 or the Sigma 24-70 f/2.8. Its only one more f-stop, but it will give you better focusing. And you don't have anything between 40 and 70mm anyway.
On the other hand, if you get really lucky at thte tables, the 16-35 would be nice. :-) |

A little off topic but don't limit yourself to Las Vegas. Be sure to visit Red Rock Canyon and Valley of Fire. |

The best lens for Vegas is one with the lens cap on.
Remember, what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas...

Hmmm, I had no problems shooting on the casino floors at the Bellagio, Caesars Palace or the Venetian last year. Maybe if I was more intrusive they would have said something, don't know. I do know there is absolutely nothing wrong with shooting at any of the other floors since there were a ton of people do so. Lots of inside architecture including ceilings, sculptures and gardens to take pictures of which is why I'd love to have had your 1.8 aperture lens at the time.

Whenever I asked about taking photos, I was told NOT to get the gambling aspect (machines, tables, people at them etc); however all the wonderfully crazy artwork, architecture etc wasn't a problem.
Once you see just how amazing the insides are, I bet you WILL be concerned about indoor photography. Bring a monopod if you have one!
Could you resist getting a photo like this one?

No but mine didn't come out 1/10th as good as that one. Unfortunately I was still figuring out what all the buttons were on my Rebel 2000 film camera back then. I did get a few decent pics but would love another crack at it again!
