:) That's usually the right thing to do around the topics of Religion and Politics (yes this is politics). Unless of course, you're in church, or a political debate.

Those whales were eating those fish before man stood on two legs and invented the explosive harpoon. By right of prior claim they could sue all humankind for stealing THEIR fish, if only they had lawyers. Told you they were smart .... |

Well, I understand it is maybe a bit hard for you people to understand...
I think we are a very few here who come from a country that trusts in fish and mostly nothing else...
The Whales around Iceland eat 30 times what Icelanders can fish. That problem was never around when we hunted whale...
Well I don't think you are wrong, we have a different things to think about ;)

Perhaps we can think about this satirical extrapolation of one of the issues involved ....
So long as we remain civil, I have no problem with hearing about contrary/alternative views of issues. |

Most people who are conservationists are usually for conserving all the earth's resources and species, that are endangered or threatened.

Being a Newfoundlander, I sympathize with the Icelanders. IMHO the conservationists don't give a !@#$ about the species they are proporting to save, just the bottom line they generate through their fund raising efforts; they do this with mis-information campaigns against people who they perceive to be less media savvy than they are (notice how they don't go up against recreational/trophy hunters in the USA - the NRA has too much power for them). Green Peace and the International Fund for Animal Welfare has been doing this for years against the Newfoundland seal hunt, even though biologist have said that if there isn't something done to control the seal population, some ground fish species such as cod will soon become extinct. The trouble is, cod aren't cute and cuddly like a seal pups and don't make good fund raisers.

I believe your opinion is completely incorrect concerning the vast majority of "tree-huggers." We (I, that is) believe that it is immoral for an insignificant proportion of the world's human population* to destroy for all time a shared resource, for the purpose of maintaining a relative luxurious lifestyle through their retirement.
*Say, the population of the USA.
If Iceland's economy is truly 90% dependent on cod, then your political and business leaders are sadly undereducated in the areas of agriculture, economics, and world history, and have let down you ordinary citizens.
Don't you find it interesting that those labelled "conservatives" politically are the people least interested in conserving anything except their own personal wealth and power?

Of course, we all know how the NRA gets their way...they buy the politicians in the US...with gun lobby money!
As far as I know, GreenPeace has fought many battles against some very formative special interest groups, including governments like France and big companies that pollute. I think the conservationists are the "Davids" in this David vs Goliath equation. |

Because DPChallengers are fishermans or Pitsamans
And speaking of fishermans.. this weekend, for the very first time I got up the courage to ask a total stranger if I could take his picture. He even said yes!

Cod is not cute but it is worth saving. The problem is that whenever man intervenes with nature either by large scale hunting or by protecting species they are going to damage the ecosystem.
If the whale population in the world's oceans is healty again I see no real problem in controlled hunting of whales.
Whales might be "intelligent", but so are pigs. What right do we have to tell people from an other country what they can and can't eat or hunt? We are telling people in asia "you can't eat dogs, they are pets" a lot of people in India don't eat cowmeat, but I guess we would not appreciate it if they came telling us not to eat cowmeat anymore.

That's a big "if," and generally the analysis is colored by who pays for the study ....
Except for the issue of unacceptable ecological damage or species extinction, I'm not telling people what they can or can't eat, merely expressing my opinion. The problem isn't eating cod, it's people wanting to eat vast quantities of it for $0.99 at fast-food outlets. |
