Just curious, what was it about this picture that made it just "ok"? I'm not complaining about my score in the Toys challenge, and a I appreciate the votes and comments! I'm just looking for a little more insight as to what would have made this picture more appealing? I received a few comments that made it appear people did not think it was real. Should I have entered the outtake below instead? (note, it's straight from camera, no post processing, so not a great 1-1 comparison).
Thanks in advance your comments! I thought this was a unique shot and pretty well executed, so I was hoping for at least a 6. Again, no complaints on the 5.8, that's a nice score - I'm just looking for a little input as to what made this just an "ok" picture - what could have made it better? (or is the whole concept just "ok")

Personally, I like the one you entered better. I think it is one of the better children's toys shots, and think it should have done a bit better. |

I like the one you entered better. I assume the outtake has not been processed, but I still would like the entry more. I think your entry would have been a little stronger had you cropped some off the bottom or moved closer when shooting, and not had the figure in the shadow. One problem with the outtake is that the castle is too close to the water and seems to be going uphill, IMO. I also like the waves in the entry shot. |

FWIW, I gave you an 8, mainly because it wasn't just a toy sitting on the floor or against a plain background. It was creative :) I liked the light and rich colours and the texture of the perfect sand, though you're right about the knight being in the shade. That made a BIG difference. The rock didn't bother me, though.
I think maybe it's that the castle needed to be turned just a touch more for a little more light to make it really pop out. Maybe the knight could have been on the left side, in the sun, but facing toward the waves with that fist raised, as if trying to drive them back and protect his castle?
Just my very unexperienced opinions, of course. :)
edited to add;
I like the placement against the hill better in the entered shot. It integrates the hill, rather than having it a second, separate spot for the eye to wander in the outtake.

THANKS for all the comments, this is very helpful! The sand was so perfect because we were in "the wave zone" (as can be seen by the water in the outtake picture). The castle was hit a few times by the waves, so I had to re-set a number of times...make sure I didn't get any footprints too close to the castle, and then jump into position and take the picture before the next big wave came - hence my missing the fact that the knight was in the shadows on my entry. I got about 10 shots off before my 4 year old started worrying about his toy getting dragged out to sea. I shut my left eye when looking through the view finder, so I failed to see an incoming wave and got my left arm and camera strap soaked (but saved the camera!) - between that and my son's concerns, we called it a day on the castle and went looking for some other picture opportunities.
Thanks again for the insights - this really helped explain a few things!! |
