This was a first for me - the commenters' average vote was way below the overall average. I really struck a nerve with this one.
I was trying to give the whole photo an aged look, including an old leather frame. It was fun to have free reign in post-processing.
For what it's worth, I had experimented with a number of frames and found the shot looked better with a large dark border. It looked too washed out otherwise. |

The border didn't bother me. If I had my druthers, I'm maybe have done it in a solid color, but what you chose was OK. Great picture. You succeeded in making it look OLD!!! I gave it a 6. |

I didn't vote, but would have given it a 6 without the border and a 5 with. Like most of the other commenters, it was too much. I sure don't think it deserved ones and twos though. I do like the old style treatment you gave it. |

Didn't vote on this challenge, but I'd have given you a 7. I really like the photo, but the border with it's two-tone colors is m'eh. If it were just the smooth base brown color, I'd have liked it better.

People love to comment on borders because it makes them look discriminating and smart. I've been stung by many a borderhater on DPC. You pretty well have to use a really benign border if you are gonna have a chance... |

I don't understand why people have to factor in the border when voting on the photograph. DPC automatically adds a border yet it gets ignored (I assume) so why not what the photographer adds if you don't like it?

Yeah, better to not comment at all. Then we can have even MORE threads with people asking why their photos scored what they did. |

The border is horrid, I dont care for it at all.
Cool shot, but does not enhance the photograph at all, it does quite the opposite. Just being honest from my point of veiw. |

Check out my comments,
Some people are so pre-disposed against the border, that they don't look to see what's actually happening in the picture. My un-intentional experiment has proved that for me.
edit - yeah, but yours IS pretty bad dude.

My point was more in line with Scalvert's pointers to get a good score. Don't give them something to vote down. A big border is just asking for a lower score, even if it fits quite nicely. |

I loved the photo but hated the border, thought is was major overkill (sorry, being honest). Border subject and photo subject did not work well together at all. |

i actually scored it rather well. i usually just ignore borders, but with the faded edges of the print it needed a frame (as it would have in real life). i didnt really pay attention to the frame just that it definitely needed one.

I like the idea of a leather border, but in this photo the border looks a bit too "flat" or "computer-generated". I think some sort of more coarse texture would have made it feet the old-fashioned feel of the rest of the photo. |

I wasn't complaining - I just found it interesting that those who commented rated the photo so much lower than the non-commenting voter. It's usually the reverse. |

No, I knew you weren't. I had no problem with your post. I just think it's sad when people who make an effort to comment are mocked and insulted when everyone seems to be wanting more comments. Perhaps that wasn't the Doc's intention, but that's how it sounded.

Border? Border??
I'll show ya' a border:
I KNEW I would get hammered, but could care.
It's how I would want it displayed in my permanent archive here. |

I scored your photo fairly highly but I did find the border a little too distracting. I love borders (looking at my challenge entries you will see that) but this one was just a little bit too much. I love the actual photo though! |

I actually like this border (the yellow shot). It enhances the shot. Generally if my eye is drawn away from the picture to the border I will vote lower. The thickness of the border isn't a factor as much as the style of the border. There is a reason most pictures are framed with mats that are a solid color. It looks better. |

BradP why you do it is fine, it would be nice of you to put that in your comments so we can read it afterward the voting ;P ...

Well isn't that quite the generalization. As someone else said, if my eyes keep getting drawn to a border, it's a distraction from the image. I'm not a "border hater". If you want to make a statement with your border, be prepared that everyone will not see your vision. Now you've given the voters an additional element to like, or not.
For the record, I like the border on Brad's "yellow" image. But at the same time, will not hesitate to comment on one that in my opinion doesn't work. |

When I'm viewing an image and a person has made an effort to include a border other than what DPC creates for our photos, I feel I should include that in their presentation of their image.
They took time to give their photo that something extra, and for good or bad, that goes towards how I see the whole package. I don't know if I've ever voted down because of a border (its possible) but if I see one that I find distracting or as taking away from the presentation as a whole, I will definitely mention it.
I'm pretty staid in my bordering, but if someone mentioned they didn't like it and why, I'd be glad for that input, maybe I'll try something different next time and see if I like the effect and maybe I won't.
In Nobody's photo I like the tones and technique used but I think the border overpowers the image since the border is very richly colored while the sepia of the photo has a more faded look. I find the border is drawing my attention away from the photo. I didn't vote that challenge but I probably would've mentioned it had I commented on the photo.
I did comment on BradP's photo, and I did mention that I thought the border was a bit big, but that I did like how it helped to reinforce an aspect of his photo.
Take it for what you will. :)
