Okay, in the past I have often wondered what was in the minds of the voters when they are looking at my images but usually just let it go, learn from it if possible and then shoot for the next challenge. But I can't seem to do it this time, so I just have to ask, "WHY DIDN'T YOU LIKE MY LEMONATOR?" :(

Everyone that saw it before the challenge LOVED him and thought it was too funny and cute, yet he totally bombed in the challenge. Now mind you I was hoping for a good score on this one but a 4.8???

I don't get this one. Compared to some of the yellow he did totally suck (all puns intended) but still a 4.8????

Please tell me why you didn't like him!

Deannda
Thank you in advance for your comments :) Love ya all, I really do, but now I may be forced to LEMONATE you! :)

Deannda,
I think the concept is way cute.

The lighting is way harsh. See the hard shadows to the left of each little lemonhead? The flash blows out right on the lemons' nose and casts a hard shadow edge all around the lemon.

Try a light to each side. One brighter than the other.
This will give depth to the image without harsh shadows.

If you only have on camera flash, then you need to shut it off when taking shots this close and use other lighting. You can even use one light to the side and a white posterboard as a reflector on the other side.

Hope that helps,
Tony

Hello Deannda. Overall I liked it and gave it a 7 - especially for creativity. I think the lighting on his face might've hurt you from doing better. Also, the angle makes the feet look more glued on than you'd probably want here.

Also, you say you got good reviews from others before the challenge. If this means that you uploaded it somewhere (even on another photo site) this may have hurt you as well. A lot of people don't like to see images posted anywhere before the actual challenge is over. If they recognize it they might vote you down.

No I emailed it to some family and friends. :)

Thanks for the comments, I do appreciate them. It was taken at the playground in the morning. Hence the harsh light.

Well to start how many of them who saw it gave you their honest opinion. If you show anything to your friends they all will say great very good etc etc. How many of them dared (to) tell you if they really thought it will do very good.
Find some friends who tell you what is on their mind rather than what you want to listen.

My friends and especially family are VERY honest with me, that I value higher than anything else. THe sad part is they also don't know photography that well as far as lighting and such, so that is why I didn't really see it myself as much. I was so caught up in the idea I failed to see the execution in the end.

From my experience, family and friends are usually biased and will mostly tell me how great the image is but won't tell me what they don't like. It's hard for them to be impartial and not see something that many of the people that don't know me will. Heck, my wife thinks all my photos should be ribbon winners. :>)

Cheers Deannda.

I gave it a 6, because it made me laugh.

I think the idea is very creative but the image itself just ok..the dark corners, and fake boots, etc. kinda cheesy - would have given you a generous 5

I think you are correct, they might not be able to tell all this lighting etc stuff. Another reason may be the photo is not so appealing when compared to other entries of the challenge. I mean lets say i like the photo an di find it cute, but then i see that there are other photos those could score better than this, might end up giving it 4 or 5. This might have happened here.

personally only thought it was a slightly above average photo and concept. i gave it a six cause i thought it to be a bit more work and creativity than just a 5. it was not like something like a wow photographic expression. cute definitely just not like cute enough for more. i agree that it is better than a 4.8 but not like a 7 average.

i too had a shot that was in no way a 4 but that is what it turned out to be, i think mostly cause it was not wow. none of my photos are great yet, but i will keep trying.

Keep in mind also that many of your friends and family might not have as high of standards as some DPC people do (I know my family and friends have limited or no knowledge of photography, so great pictures to them really differ to great pictures here).

There is a high standard on this site, and while I enjoyed your picture, it didn't captivate me or stand out as an exceptional photograph as some of the other yellow shots did

it's a cute idea, but not a very good photograph. i probably would have scored it a 5 for meeting the challenge, and left it at that. i can easily see how the 3s & 4s outweigh all the scores above 5, which is why it finished as it did.

so, on one hand, you and your family and friends like it. that's fine.

one the other hand, dpc didn't really go for it. why not? well, you can go around for hours on that...

if you want to do better in the future, what you might rather do, though, is spend some time with shannon's blue-ribbon blueprint. if you are going to set up a shot, ask yourself, "how would scalvert do this?" and if the honest answer is, "oh get real, he would NEVER consider this", then maybe you shouldn't do it. that is, if you are looking for a score. if you don't care, then do whatever you want, and take whatever you get.

great link. kinda states the obvious but lets you realize that it really is the obvious that makes a winner.

Okay, thanks everyone, I understand now and appreciate the honesty. As I said before I never bother asking but this time I just thought my little Lemonator deserved better than a 4.8, no big, time to move and get my butt kicked in yet some other challenge! :)

And in case you haven't figured it out, I being sarcastic and trying to have a little fun. I know when I put some of my stuff up there it sucks rocks and will sink like a stone but I like it and that is all that matters.

No more replies are needed, I got my answer and all is cool. ;)

I'm also going to ask Site Council to go ahead and lock this thread up before it becomes another dead horse issue, kay?

Why I usually don't start threads, :)
