Hey all,
As I'm sure we all do (especially us looking in from the outside of the dSLR world) I get to drooling while watching any event with a photographer or 900 taking shots of celebs/athletes strolling by.
What I wonder is why are they using what appear to be such long lenses when they are standing 10 feet away? I was even watching curling the other day (no comments on that!) and the photographers were about 30 feet away and the end of the lens was as round as the rocks being thrown.
Just wondering...

| the physical length of a lens doesn't determine the focal length or magnification of the lens. Some wider lenses are actually pretty long physically. |

| I used to shoot journalism photos with my 35-350L and got some funny looks when pointing it at people from 10 feet... |

Rather thought that was the case, but I'm not in any place to walk up to some guy and ask him. Yup, I'm safe to ask the dumb questions.
I guess that's also why I've seen a couple 300 mm lenses that are pretty short too.
