I'm trying to make friends with firefox, but there is something that bugs me and I don't know how to fix it.

Starting from the very top of the window, there are five rows. The first three are good, the last two I want to get rid of.
The rows are:
1) The window header/title
2) toolbar with file, edit, view etc etc etc
3) toolbar with navigation buttons etc
4) empty waste of space
5) empty waste of space

I know that right-clicking on an empty spot on the toolbar gets me to the "Customize" box, and I figured out how to add/remove/relocate buttons and segments, but I can NOT figure out how to get rid of those two empty rows.

I'd appreciate any help from you clever folks out there.

Under your View -> Toolbars menu, what's checked off?

I use the customize box to drag my quick-links "Bookmarks toolbar" on the menu bar, but for some reason the empty space remains: to get rid of it, I choose the menu item View|Toolbars|Bookmarks toolbar and uncheck it. The items stay in the menu bar but the empty space goes away.

mk and skylen, thank you!!

I had three items on there, all were checked: bookmarks, navigation and google. I wanted them all, so I couldn't untick them. I had tried unticking them right in the beginning, and the buttons disappeared, so I didn't want to do it again.

However, since then I have been stuffing around with it and clicked here, there and everywhere. This time when I tried it again, the empty space poofed but the buttons are still there.

Wooooooo hooooo, problem solved. Don't know why, but who cares.....

Thank you :-)

I'm all for helping people to make friends with Firefox. :)

What do you use the Google Toolbar for? Firefox has that neat little drop down box that allows you to search a number of different engines so if that's all you're using the toolbar for, you can probably ditch it. I haven't used it myself, though, so maybe it's useful for other things.

Thanks for the tip, my bookmark toolbar links are now at the top. Way to make use of unused space! And by the way, if you go to Firefox's website, you can find plug ins to add more search engines to the search box.

I may find out that Firefox can take care of several of these without the Google part, but so far I liked it for searching, autofill forms, google desktop (LOVE that one), gmail link and popup killer to name just a few.

I use the built-in search box (defaults to google, but you can choose other search engines from the dropdown, like Wikipedia, IMDB, Amazon.com, etc).

Definitely check out these two extensions, they are highly recommended:

+ AdBlock Plus 0.5.11.3 - contains whitelisting and other extra features
+ Adblock Filterset.G Updater - 0.3.0.3 - automatically updated whitelists and blacklists: never see an ad again!! It's heavenly.
