I shot my first senior session ever on Saturday and was the first time using the 30D. Serious critiques welcome... I am still new to the whole photography thing :)

What is a 'senior session'? sounds like sumthing to do with old people? (senior citizens).
some nice picks there. My favorite is 10 with the capture of the flying water. |

Hi Joshua - I like no 8 the best, I think if you had used some fill in flash on 4 that would have maybe improved it a bit? All in all I think your shots show a lot of promise - shot 10 is good, like the angle.
Shots 5 and 6 the model looks like she is trying too hard making her look a bit miserable. On shots 9 and 12 try cropping out the sea shore/rocks in the background, also try a wider apeture to blur the backgrounds maybe

My sister just asked me to take her senior pictures in a couple of weeks....I'm terrified! Your photos turned out great! I hope to get as good results from my attempt.
If anyone has any tips and hints I would greatly greatly appreciate any help given....

I'm beginning to wonder what I have gotten myself into!

I'm surprised nobody's commented that the dark eye makeup is really excessive here. In many of the shots her eyes look like black holes to me. I suppose maybe this is what she LIKES, but sheesh... As far as posing and light and a general happy, natural look, you've done well.

Bear... totally agree with you... this is my sister I was doing these shots for and I tried to tell her. This is what her friends and her like and will has gotten me more business, but from a personal preference stand point it is way to much.

Mike... thanks for the critique and I think I am going to try the crop suggestions on 9 and 12...

Singsunshine... I am only a year into photography and have only done two weddings and bridal session and this senior shoot... I was a bit nervous about the results, but just do your best and I am sure it will come out alright. I am glad I was doing a family member for my first senior shoot, because it was easier to get emotion out of her and if things didn't work out I could alway shoot again. Good luck!

I agree about the eye makeup. Maybe you can suggest to her doing some with a more natural look and compare (tell her you want different looks for your portfolio?)

I like 2, 6, and 12. I wish you had a good closeup like #6 with her smiling.

Overall a nice set of shots. |

Wow, I love these. I like #6 the best and the makeup really doesn't distract or bother me. But everyone has an opinion. Apparently this is how she wears it and afterall, shouldn't a portrait look like the person?

I love your lighting in all of them. And love the playfulness of the last few pics. Excellent work.

2nd'ed. I totally agree. Lots of good angles in the shots, though.

learn how to pose - //www.photodigital.net/zeltsman/
It makes a HUGE difference in the final image, and gives you something to do besides 'Smile' or 'turn a bit' - it gives you a clue.
