...I'm trying to learn but it seems I fail when I try something different. What went wrong with this entry? please offer some advice. I received two comments and both were opposite.

To be honest, it looks like an average image and it received a slightly below average score probably because of the blue background. Too intense. I'm in the same boat lately - many average shots, but when I look at them I can surely see that they are, in fact, average.
When you take your challenge photos and prep the one you want to submit, it is a good idea to pretend it is not yours and imagine what you would give it and also imagine all the competition - will it stand out?
It's all a learning experience, Scott, even (and especially) "Failing"
I'll also add that two opposing comments basically cancel each other out unless you revere one of the commenters' opinion more than the other. The score is more telling in many cases where you receive few or no comments. |

Thanks for taking the time to help me understand. I do agree the subject was just avg in a challenge will a lot of above avg photos.
Thanks,

I think the biggest problem with it would be that it doesn't have that "Wow" factor. It's technically alright, but it doesn't really have that "beautiful photo" quality.
I applaud you on trying something different. :) That can be hard. |

I think maybe if the blue background had been cloth or even a piece of wood it would have done significantly better.

I'm not anywhere close to an expert, but I would agree with this. The tape measure really stands out too much in my opinion. The background is also pretty flat, it looks almost superimposed. It's a great idea and it can work very well. I think that all it needs is a little less harsh color and more depth. Just my thoughts, sorry if this sounds harsh at all.
