Butterflyphoto has the Nikon D50 w/ this lens for $533! Sounds like a deal to me. Is this lens any better than the 18-55mm kit lens? They have the D50 w/ the kit lens for $582. What do you think?

Someone? Anyone?

Looks like only three people on the site have one listed and only two of them have posted in the forums so far. Perhaps try a PM if you get no responses here...

Get a D50 plain, and buy a Tamron SP 28-75 2.8 instead. But yeah, that seems to be a decent deal. Their accessories/warranties are overpriced mostly, so watch it on that. Make sure that the lens is not grey market, and comes with Nikon warranty intact.

Late response! I used this lens on my film camera and have only used it once on my D70 when my 18-70 was in for repair. I have to say I was quite surprised. It is very light and feels flimsy, but it is quite sharp and has good contrast. I was also quite surprised to find that it has very little ghosting and flaring.
I have some pictures taken with this lens in my gallery if you would like to take a look. Check the exif info: if the focal length is 80mm or less it was taken with this lens. This was before I knew anything about Photoshop, so there is very little post-processing - mainly contrast adjustments and certainly no unsharp mask.

The only negative is that 28mm is not really wide enough.
Hope this helps!

I have one that I got as a part of a kit. The guy at the camera shop
tried talking me out of it due to the "crop factor". I decided to get the
18-55 but they were out of them so I stayed with the 28-80. I'm no expert
but it works for me. I use it for a lot of indoor shots of the kids. I
found a Quantaray 70-300 lens on ebay for next to nothing to get longer
zoom shots. That one doesn't focus as fast as the 28-80 and seems to hunt
for focus in lower light. It's a good starter lens for the price. I'm
happy with mine but I don't expect or demand much from it due to my
level of experience.

Nikon Nikkor review

"AF-Nikkor 28-80 mm f/3.5-5.6 Rated (3-3.5) This featherweight lens, all plastic even down to the lens mount, isn't exactly my preferred optical choice. However, if I concentrate on the pictures produced by it, the situation changes for the better. Pictures are rendered with good sharpness and rich colours, although clearly not with the "bite" of the better lenses. However, for amateur use the lens would be an excellent choice. Set the aperture to f/8 for the best results, and shield the front element from bright light sources."

The above is posted from the linked site.
