Correct. It's a $100.00 add-on. Canon's rationale here is to keep the f/4L as affordable as possible, and not everyone wants a tripod collar; it just gets in the way if you're hand-holding, which is what a LOT of people do. This lens is by FAR one of the nicest lenses in the Canon lineup, and I think they are to be commended in keeping the price as low as they have.

strange, I find it a lot easier to handhold my 80-200L with the tripod collar on... I never take the thing off! |

Me neither! The tripod collar never comes off my 70-200/2.8. There's a hidden benefit... I keep my neck strap over my shoulder, but stick the tip of the tripod collar in either the front or back pocket of my jeans. Takes all the weight off the strap and the lens mount :-) |

Oh, I leave it ON. I never take it off. But for me it's not an asset when hand-holding, it's a little kludgy. If I rotate it "just so" it's not an issue, though. My point is, IF you're on a budget and IF you're planning to only hand-hold anyway, then it's nice you can get the lens for less money isn't it?
This is Canon's budget L-glass, and a great bargain it is too :-)
