What's the advantage of a card reader over just uploading directly from your camera?

04/06/2006 05:48:45 PM · #2
You can shoot on one card while uploading from another...

Having a card reader won't drain your battery.
04/06/2006 05:50:35 PM · #4
Card readers are usually faster.
04/06/2006 05:52:09 PM · #5
Those three reasons pretty much sum it up. The only other advantage is having a multi-card reader and being able to upload other's pictures without hooking their camera up to your computer.

Also....
Doesn't use your camera's batteries
Much faster than using the camera for most cameras
Can be left attached to computer so you don't have to hunt for and attach the transfer cord
Doesn't require extra software on your computer
No extra software also means you can DL to any computer
Can be built into your computer

EDIT: Don't ya just love when typing out a longish post how they become redundant because of other posts that get slipped in before you can finish yours. :(

All of the above and one more reason, if your memory card becomes currupt you can usually recover some or all of you pictures with a cardreader and some software.

Good one.

If you need to update your firmware it makes it easier!

For CF cards, all of the advantages are there - but popping them in and out carries the possibility of bending a pin. It's rare, but it does happen (and the pins are in the camera, not the card).

I was just going to post that.

The advantages you gain are not worth risking a bent pin on the camera. Nothing worse then having a $1500. paper weight or a $200. repair bill because you wanted to save a few seconds uploading or some charge on the battery.

Just get a larger CF card and dont ever take it out.

Do a search on google for "memory card error" or "will not read memory card" you will get pages of people that this problem has happened to them.

Once the cameras all change over to SD or XD memory then it would be ok to pull em in and out.

I've always wondered how people bend pins using CF cards, I've been using CF for years, poppin them in and outa tons of different devices probably thousands of times with never a problem. Seriously, its hard for me to even imagine how it happens, seems like they go firmly guided into the slot with little to no resistance??

another good reason to use a card reader is that turning your camera on and off so much might damage it self. thats why i rather have the chance of having my bill set only on the pins than the whole electronics

One good reason NOT to use a card reader:
You'll never go out shooting and find you've left your memory card at home.
04/06/2006 08:25:11 PM · #14
Yeah all good reasons BUT nobody mentioned the best by far => Not having to open and close that stupid little rubber gromit on the camera!! :-)

I have seen peeps put them (CF) into there pockets with no protection (not practicing safe CF)... They seem to think that these units are indestructable.

The logic portion of there brain housing group shuts down and fails to report the Lint, Dirt and tons of other tiny things in their pocket just waiting to jump in those holes on the CF card.

An ounce of prevention...ah you know the rest of it...

I used a CF wallet for all mine...

CF bending pins in a Camera is a Lame excuse.

The reason I use a card reader is I don't want my camera sitting around on my desktop just asking to be knocked on the floor, coffee spilled on it, and dust collecting all over it. My camera is usually safely stowed in my pelican case of which is coffee, boot, and dust proof.

The key to not bending pins with your CF card is to never forcc your card it. You card should slide smoothly down the rail and a very light press will set it in place.

Good luck.

Thanks everyone. Some very good points to consider.

Not that I recommend it, but I have, on more than one occasion, run a CF card through the washer and dryer with no ill effects or either the card or the images contained on it.
