I am trying to figure out a portable studio solution.
I have some strobes, now what to do for a background.

so far all i have is some thick black cloth and two old tripods that i have the cloth draped over :S

Any recommendations on good portable backdrops?

This is my portable setup, with blue background I used for a kiddies portrait day last year.. I've also got some black velvet for it, a grey canvas, and it fits standard 10ft wide rolls of paper..

It is branded 'falconeyes' and I got it locally for $300 NZ. Basically two very sturdy light stands and a pole that breaks down into three bits that goes across the top.

It gives me a 3.6m high by 3.1m wide (approx 11ft x 10ft) backdrop that breaks down into a foldup bag, in which I can also fit two light weight lightstands I use for the strobes.

Cheers, Me.

yeah those stands look pretty good. It looks like they are probably the same ones I have for my strobes. wide aluminium tubing, falcon eyes brand.

how big is the travel bag? are the two flash stands you fit in the travel bag the smaller black ones or the large grey ones?

All of a sudden it seems like quite a bit of equipment to be totting around.. strobes and a background add up pretty quickly in terms of weight and size.

The light stands I fit in are the smaller black ones, and the bag is about 1.2m long by .5m in diameter...

I'll dig it out tonight when I get home and take a pic (Tomorrow morning your time...)

this is great- I was just thinking about posting something this morning on the subject. I was wondering if PVC pipes could work.
Anyone else have any examples of what they use?

Giant sheets of foam core, for head shots and 3/4 length portraits. It comes in a loy of different colors, and is really cheap. Seamless paper is also a great option many colors and relatively cheap.

For the foam core one light weight stand and a large spring clamp.

For the seamless 2 medium weight light stands and a piece of PVC pipe. The seamless comes in a roll with a cardboard center.

As promised, the bag photo, with me for scale. :-).

(Taken in the spare room, we're renovating, about which I am very happy apparently.)
