I am trying to colour correct an old faded photo of my mom. I was wondering if anyone could point me toward a good tutorial? Or maybe even take a stab at it...

Tutorials, forums, etc. See if you can get your image accepted as on of their challenges...many people would work on it. |

Just a quick go at this with curves and colourise tools in Paint Shop Pro 9. I'm sure a lot more could be done with it with a larger file.

Wow, the best I could get out of it was a dirty yellow. Unfortunately, this seems to be sun damaged so badly that the colors will have to be replaced or painted in instead of "found" in the image as is. I selected a white point on the clouds and adjusted levels almost all the way to the right. This brought out a blue halo on the left side in the sky where the picture was not exposed to light for as many years as the rest.
So yeah, more of a full restoration project than a quick fix. Like making Casablanca into a full color movie.

This basic question came up in this thread:
Turning B&W into color
and used this as an example of making something look fairly realistic that never had any color in it to begin with:
In a nutshell, by creating a new layer via copy, adding a tone/color, then erasing everything I didn't
want changed, and kept repeating until I had a fair resemblance of what it may have looked like at one time.
No one-size fits all answer, just need to experiment.
Another way is to make a new layer via copy, then use the magic wand to select an area, make the changes, (usually done in color balance, adjusting colors in the shadows, midtones and highlights to retain the luminosity & details - simply painting over would wipe the details) sometimes even going too far with it, then while still selected, edit, fade the change, and adjust watching it on screen, then deselect and erase away what was changed that wasn't desired to be changed, then flatten and keep repeating.
