This is like high school policies - nowhere in the high school policy at the school I went to did it say "Murder is expressly disallowed." However, I'm pretty sure that since it's a more global law, it would apply, even on school property. :) |
I want to reiterate this excellent point in response to the idea that the words "no holds barred" could be interpreted in some way to mean that non-site specific laws were also suspended!!

The way I see it, there are laws in life that some follow to prove they are human. and there are laws at DPC put in place to govern fairness.
I didn̢۪t murder anyone or steal anything to create my entry. I simply read the exception to the regular rules and built my picture without jeopardizing my integrity as a person.
I learned a little about crops, in the fill the frame challenge.
I learned a little about traditional duotones in the duotone challenge. Which I failed the first time around, I am looking forward to doing it better the next time.
This challenge I was trying to learn something about editing. When the exception to the rules said, dig your old photos out lets see what you can do. I simply read this as a photoshop lesson.
I am not so proud that I cant admit I was wrong. And I apologize to everyone for my misinterpretation of the exception to the rules of DPC in this challenge. When Magnetic9999 posted his fabulous starwars rendition earlier in this thread. That is when I realized my shot should be disqualified. I was stunned at how awesome he was able to snap that together in 3 seconds. Mine took quite a bit more time than that and wasn̢۪t nearly as cool.
I did request that my entry be disqualified and it was.
I am done with this thread now, I hope they will hide it away in a dark place somewhere. |

That was a very 'decent' and probably difficult stance to post. Acts like these compel me participate even more. I tip my hat to Gringo.

Here is why post editing is so important. As a commercial photographer I have to come away with an image no matter what. You try to plan, but the environment doesn't care. Post editing the image alows me to complete my vision. I notice that most of the rules do not allow spot editing. That's the main reason I've never submitted. The other is, I have a lot of shots I could enter already, but I'm way to busy to constantly keep up with the challenges. I also shoot a lot of 6x7chrome and scan it in. When I travel I like to take dusk photos. Most of the time the exposure is in the minutes. Digital doesn't handle this well...Here is an example of the Golden Gate Bridge and it's 11 min exposure.

Is there a way to upload them off the hard drive, instead of using the website addy? This is the foirst forum where it wouldn't let me upload the photos. |

You have to be a paid member to have 10mb of portfolio space to store non-entry photos for linking. You can also upload them to another site like pBase, but you might have to pay there too .... |

If you can find out the current IP address of your computer, you could edit the link so that the photo would display from your hard drive as long as you remain connected. After that, the link would probably break unless you have a static IP address.
Don't do this unless you have a firewall and know what you're doing -- you are putting your hard disk on the internet. |

Except for a very very small spot edit (most wouldn't even notice the difference) I did a totally DPC-legal shot for 'The Future', taken within a week of the challenge. It just fit, and it's probably going to finish top 10. Typically most people here like photography I guess...
If you can tell right away that the photo has been manipulated, it's probably not very good PhotoShop work...

That's the point. If you can tell it's been retouched, then you've failed. I'll become a member tomorrow and uplaod the photos.
Thanks for all your help! |

Exactly! I've read lots of complaints about heavily manipulated images being voted down - as if the only reason they are being voted down is because they are heavily manipulated. In fact, they are probably being voted down because they look heavily manipulated, which means they weren't done well. There are quite a few entries that are obvious by their content they are montages or heavily edited, but they don't look heavily edited, and I suspect they'll do well.
It's always difficult to have these discussions during the challenge, when you can't cite specific examples.... :-( |

I uploaded them to my portfolio, but I still can't get them to work in the forum. If you want to see them I guess you'll have to look at my portfolio. They are the 1st 3 images in landscapes.
sorry. |

That's the same way I did it? Even your photo goes to the same link that I embedded btween the [img] tags.
Wonder what I'm doing wrong? |

That url goes to the photo's page, not the image itself, so it won't work with the [img] tags.
Either change the tags to [url][/url] or go to the photo page itself, right-click on the image to display its Properties (I'm assuming you're running Windows) and copy the url of the image itself (should end with a .jpg filetype). Copy and paste that url between the [img] tags and the full-sized image will display in the thread. I did basically the same thing with the thumbnail -- I usually don't put the full-sized image in the thread because it can mess up some people's display, and can cause extremely slow loading of the forum page for people with low bandwidth. |

Thanks! I'll work on those thumbails for the next time. ;D I'm also on a Mac right now, but I have both at home.

I think on a Mac you click and hold in the image, and then pick "Go To Target" or something from the pop-up menu to get to the image's url -- then copy/paste it from the browser's address window. I use both at both home and at work, but my faster connection at home is on the PC.

Control click on the image and open it in it's own window. Then past the url. That's how I did it at least. |
