If I think that the original of a challenge entry has been viewed in Windows Viewer (not rotated or anything, just viewed once), but I'm not sure, is there any way to find out? And if it has been viewed, should I request DQ or let it go?

Why would viewing a shot in Windows Viewer be grounds for a dq? And how would you be able to tell just by looking at a shot that it has been viewed with Windows Viewer?

Sorry I'm not understanding the question, are you saying an original has been viewed by someone else other than the photographer?

I believe that happens from time to time mostly where people help others with selecting and editing a photo. It may not be morally correct but it is not grounds for DQ.

from this thread.

There's also this thread.

So I'm under the impression that viewing a file alters it...

That in itself would not be grounds for a DQ - just viewing a file. But if the EXIF is altered then it would not appear as an original unaltered image and there would be no way of knowing what was done to the image. The image usually has to be altered or rewritten to change the EXIF data. However, from the sounds of it, you want to DQ an image because you feel someone viewed the image in a program that may have altered the original EXIF data and for no other reason. Not a very strong reason for a DQ request...just suspecting an image was viewed with a certain program.

Thanks. :) That's what I wasn't sure about... if I viewed my original in a program that might have altered the EXIF, and they requested it... I'd hate to get in trouble for that.
Oh, and I meant the question in regard to my own entry, not someone else's... sorry I didn't clarify that more. I should have said self DQ. :)

So what about auto-rotate in-camera? That doesn't cause any EXIF problems, right? (for DPC validating purposes)

Right - should be fine.
