I̢۪m not complaining nor am I upset with my score (it is above my average) but I would like to start seeing some 6+ scores. Could someone give me some insight why this entry did not make it to the 6̢۪s?
I thought it to be a different take on macro/abstact.
I thought it had a creative title
I thought the focus was where it needed to be
And I thought the DOF was good to focus on the area of the subject.
Am I wrong about these thoughts?
HELP PLEASE,
-SDW

It actually looks better in tumbnail than it does full size. It's very difficult to "see" the OOF chain at full size, but it's quite present in the composition in thumbnail. At full size, there's a very unfortunate thing happening: the image is divided vertically by the OOF, light area on the gear wheel. Nothing on the right side of the image is really working in the composition, unlike in the thumb, where the chain linkage is a significant player in the overall impact.
Robt.

Its a very cool shot.
I would have choped out most of the chain, and just left the sprocket.
But my shot was just okay too...so dont go too much on my comment. :) |

Thanks for the comments. I am tired of being in the 5's and I'm trying new things. I guess when trying something new it takes practice before the rewards come.
Again thanks,

The overall average for this challenge was only (a shameful, IMO) 5.12 ... I'm happy these days to claw my way anywhere above 5. |

Maybe if the noise/grain was smoothed up a bit would bring up the score. A blue background would also up the score.

I find that the depth of field makes this "3-D" and therefore not very abstract. |

The dof left a very small section of the photo in focus, and that focussed part was not terribly engaging to my eye. I don't mind the rough grey ugliness and lack of super-crisp outlines, but it has seemed to me that that combo is not a dpc cuppa tea. So given these issues, a 5.8 is great - it says that your technical skill overwhelmed the 'problems'. You should feel good about this one, and consider that maybe you'll strike gold, or red, or blue... next time ;-) (or... just take photos that make you happy!) |
