Okay.. so I did a search to determine if the adjustments I want to do in the Digital Photo Professional thingie I got with my camera (for RAW) would be legal for a basic challenge and I've ended up thoroughly confused.

First question: Is adjusting the WB using the Color Temp mode and slider valid for basic or just advanced?

Second question: When working in B&W mode is changing the filter effect to a different color (Yellow, Orange, Red and Green (or none) are available) valid for basic or just advanced? Does this change at all if you first change your Picture Style from Standard to B&W?

Third question: Is changing the Toning Effect for B&W images valid for basic or just advanced?

Fourth question: Err..Is changing your picture style from Standard to B&W okay for basic?

I'm getting all confused with the rule about filters and stuff since each of these things can be adjusted in camera.

I guess it breaks down to me wondering if I'm fiddling with my image adjustments in DPP and like the effect but didn't shoot with that effect on in the first place, will I run into rule violation problems?

Thanks for any guidance. :)

1. yes for basic & advanced
2. Adding a color filter is illegal for basic, but OK for advanced. It may seem odd that you can achive the same effect in color temp in the RAW converter, but there it is.
3. As long as the effect is used through out the image and not selectivly applied on cetain elements hue and saturation effects are basic compatible.
4. Conversions using saturation are fine, using actions may not be because some use filters as discussed in question 2.

All the above is my understanding and may be subject to revision after someone from the SC weighs in.

Everything you have asked you can do in Basic....there are ways to do it legally. Using Adjustment Layers (filter) is legal in both also (ie the Photo filter adjustment layer-where you can add yellow, orange, blue, etc tint to it).

Hi again!

The one area I was most unsure about (thank you for all the clarifications both of you, btw!) was changing the filter effect. I realize you can add a tint to your images but this doesn't do that, it gives it deeper contrasts or different highlights I think. That's what I see at least when I move the slider around. I think its supposed to mimic having one of those B&W specific filters on the lens of your camera.

This seems to be a very interesting and useful adjustment but not legal for basic from what I'm reading here. Which is a pain. I like the effect it made. Of course if I decide to shoot B&W for a basic challenge I'll be sure to set the camera with those filters ahead of time so I can get that effect. Good to know not to adjust it afterwards though.

Thanks again!
