There have been a number of "where's the skiff?" comments. In the interests of full disclosure, I must admit that I dragged the skiff to shore, dismantled it, and constructed the cattails from the shards of the skiff. I was extremely fortunate to have completed the task before sunset. I'm currently being sued by the owner of the skiff, but it was worth it for a virtual blue ribbon :-)

A skiff is a small boat, and I am famous for having them in my high-scoring images.

A skiff is a small boat, such as the rowboat seen in many of the great images Robert has previously shared with us.

Huh....I have always heard it called a "boat" or a "small boat"
Great shot anyway. Maybe not having a boat gave you the ability to win.

FWIW, when I scored this (high) I almost commented that it was a Bear_Music image, but decided against it.
(gasp) There was a slight possibility I could have been wrong!
However, I do know a skiff when I see one, and those cattails are NO skiff!

Brother Bear...dude.
I thought we were with the understanding that that skiff was the flagship to our invasion of England. WHAT HAPPENED?
You dismantled the flagship for a prop? My god bro, what ever you are drinking I want some.
As for England, I guess 'Plan 9' is going to have to do for now.
Anyway, nice cattails, good on ya getting the blue. I just hope we can get some zombies to make 'Plan 9' work.

Lloyd Bensen put it in perspective back in the 1988 vice presidential debates when he said, "Cattails, I served with the Skiff, I knew the Skiff, the Skiff was a friend of mine. Cattails, you are no Skiff!"

Oh, my, you're so inventive. And here I thought the cattails were all natural. |

It has been rumored that there are indeed several skiffs in this photo. Clever camoflaging, a skill plied early on in the colonies, has made them virtually impossible to see by human and duck eyes. One of the conspiracy theories even argues this picture was taken from one of the skiffs serving as a deviously disguised duck blind. The truth will out... |

A slip of the pen can be forgiven, Bear, didn't you mean to say 'infamous'? :D |

Van's actually got it right. These are Phragmites, and they are not a native species. "Cattails" sounds so much better though, and they certainly are picturesque. Nevertheless, there's a concerted attempt going on to get them out of our local wetlands.

Something is rattling around in my skull about a skiff possibly being a flat-bottomed boat... Is that in any way accurate or is it just a tumbleweed rolling through seld used territory?
Incidentally, I'm kinda surprised it didn't get a DQ request for removal of major objects on the assumption that a skiff would be present... : |

yes...huge congrats bear on a very well deserved, and very long time commin' ribbon.I must admit, as soon as i saw the shot i was pretty sure it was yours, but the missing skiff did throw me off. I thought for a second someone found your honey spot and claimed it for themselves

My dictionary says that a skiff is a "small light boat". None of the boats in Bear's pictures seem to have lights, so it's my theory that they are not skiffs at all. Perhaps they are dinghies, or maybe even dories. I'd even take a runabout. |

Being raised on the Bay, I see tons. Pug, I think they mean "light" as in not "heavy". It is a small boat, can even have a motor, or can just be used with oars. Skiffs are generally very light in weight and can usually be carried by hand. Nowadays, they even call a boat with a good sized motor on it a skiff.

You could also call them a punt I think. Like in the navy, we had 'paint punts', which were little boats the deck apes would use to go around and add layers of paint to the hull of the ship.

And here as well. Our beachline and creeks are covered with them. They come thru each year and thin them out, yet they make for wonderful additions to a photo.

The term "skiff" properly refers to a small, flat-bottomed boat with a pointed bow. If the bow is squared off, it becomes a "pram". The boat in "skiff at sunset" is actually a skiff. The others are just small boats. But speaking more generally, where I come from (Southern California) we'd refer to any smallish, outboard-powered craft as a skiff, so I tend to do that. I'm sure the locals here on the Cape would not agree with me :-)

Bear...not to change the subject on what a 'skiff' is.
Don't you ever sleep? My god man, I am up early because my career demands it. But, when I went to bed, you were still on line.
Come on now, get some shut eye. We are depending on you for the invasion of England.
