If this is not happening with your team than it certainly is with another, because people want to win and under this new team order the motivation is present. I don't want to hear the argument that the same thing could have occured prior to the team competition. Someone may say that a person wanting to win badly enough may give every photo a score of 1 (which I'm sure is not beneath one or two people). However, that would have affected everyone equally. One of the big differences is that unser the team concept your team members can now vote for their own team's entries. On the flip side, receiving one or two unreasonably low scores is different than receiving them from an entire team or possibly from more than one team. This will most hurt those who are not participating on a team. That person will not receive the high votes from team members (because they don't have any) and will receive unreasonable low votes from other teams thinking that their nice entry might be from a competing team. I'm sure this system is fun for those involved and great to make close relationships with a small group of other photographers, but comes across as being exclusive rather than inclusive as the site has seemed to be in the past. As my post implys I fear that unless there are specific team challenges where the team approach is restricted to, this may be a huge negative turn for those who are not on teams and the site in general... Think about it... |

anthonyczaja,
Good post! I was going to say something just like this, but you beat me to the punch. I concur with your opinions completely. The team members certainly could and mosly likely will collaborate to boost their scores and rankings. The participants are probably aware that voting all 10's for their team and all 1's for everyone else will negate all of their votes. So, I'd guess they will be more clever and use a lot of 8's and 9's for friends and 2's and 3's for everyone else. I hope the SC takes a look at this. |

I HIGHLY doubt that. Though these are called teams, all we're really doing is comparing groups of scores in an otherwise-ordinary challenge. Other than those who have posted in this thread, I have no idea which members have entered, much less which shot is theirs. |

Perhaps but I find that a much too pessimistic view. I am on a team and I have not nor will I tell my team mates about my Image. Why? Cuz it cheating and I want a fair competition. Does that mean everyone will do the same no but I trust in people as it̢۪s my nature.
I have voted this challenge. My vote span this time is 4-5-6-7 with a few eights. I gave no one a score lower than 4.
If someone needs to cheat to win then karma will get them in the end. I can only have 100% control on my actions and not worry about others.
And FWIW I am at 5.4XXX and I thought for sure I would be at a 4.XXXX!
Just my $.02 it̢۪s all good!

Wow! With all due respect to a SC member, you hold an incredibly naive opinion about the integrity of a fairly large number of people, who are intent upon team winning.

... and trash talking, and competing for bragging rights. In other words creating motivation for a group of people to vote their photos higher than all other photo's. |

Heh... we've been trash talking and competing for bragging rights for years. Nothing has changed that would be worth risking a site ban for a higher score. |

I find that most of the people that are on the teams have been here for 2-3 years if not longer. If they are suppose to be cheating now because its a competition and not before (but it still was a competition before). I am sure they would have slipped up along time ago. Other than the beginning of the team set up. I have not talked to anyone on my team. Nor have I made any comments on any of their entry's. I understand your points anthonyczaja. But I find most people who bring up the issue of cheating have had first hand knowledge of it...ie been caught or accused of it or someone cheated to win something from them. Not that I am saying that is your situation or anyone elses.
My last thoughts on entering this team challenge was cheating. For me it was about helping the team out with any shots I can. Simple as that and not to drag the team down with a DQ.

Wow... I think people take this WAY too seriously. These "teams" are just a group of people banded together to see how scores compare. We are not competing for anything and just did this as to bring a little bit of motivation into achieving a high quality pic. Even the people who get all upset about individual challenges need a reality check as they are fighting over an imaginary cyberspace blue ribbon which in the grand scheme of things means NOTHING!
Anybody who cheats to win nothing... really needs something better to do with their time. I would honestly say that I doubt anybody on here is voting differently because of these team events. It just so happens that a lot of these images suck thus the low votes! I don't even know if any of my "team" has even entered this challenge nevermind what pictures they have submitted.
All that being said... I think you all suck cause my score is WAY lower than I was expecting! :)

I think everyone is cheating...against me...
Every voting member here at DPC has PM'd eachother and figured out which image is mine.
Now, you all are voting - and giving my Yellow III image scores of 3 - 5.
I know this is happening.
There is NO other explanation as to why my score is so low.
(It can't be due to the shot itself...it SCREAMS perfection).
Sinners.

Ok. I understand your concern.
I am the worst photog in this Team thing (not just on my team, but the whole shah-bang) - there was a poll and I saw the results. (uhm just kidding...about the poll, that is.)
If ANYONE was going to cheat or collaborate, it would be me or my teammates (to try to help me get a good score). I struggled to come up with an idea for Yellow III - but NOT ONCE did I PM anybody (on my team or elsewhere in the DPC community) for help.
I haven't even received a PM from one of my teammates since the Challenge was announced. And I assure you, none of them know which is my image.
My score isn't good.
At all.
And it has nothing to do with others conspiring against me...my image just didn't mesh with the DPC voting community.
DPC is for having fun.
Cheating is never fun or worthwhile.
That is all.

I assume you went through all the yellow entries and marked, "Ugh, another flower shot!", just like you did on the clocks in the 2 second challenge.
Furthermore, I notice the team members are quickly defending the purity of their coalitions. |

There is certainly the possiblity that mayhap one or two maybe going by this approach BUT I think it HIGHLY UNLIKELY that there is cheating going on in the teams. Why?
1) Because scores are typically lower in the first few days of voting. I notice a trend where the scores go up by .5 to 1 entire point in the last few days of voting. Why? I don't know, but I have noticed that trend.
2) If you go to the dropdown menu of photographer profiles you will see that there are over 42,000 registered profiles. There is the old addage that "the more people you have in a video store trying to pick one movie the more impossible it is to settle on one". Every person is different and as such every person has it in their mind just what is best at 'Yellow' and there is the possibility of over 42,000 possibilities or opinions (Now if only 90% of those profiles would vote and even better if we could get 50% of that number to leave comments that would be GREAT!!!! Comments, please sir, I'd like some more:-) )
3) Most people here want an honest win and realize fudging or cheating won't give them that.
4) Using PM would leave a easy trail of cheating. Too easy to get caught.

*sigh* I'm so disappointed.....I really thought (yeah, I know everyone says this) that I had a good shot. Certainly a better photo than my Abstract Macro, though that's scoring better. Go figure.
If a couple of dear souls would give me their opinion on this shot when the challenge gets done, it seems I really need it. It seems the bar for high votes keeps getting pushed up, up, up!
Some really great shots in this group! There were a few creative ones that just tickled me :-) |
