As you know, the new Canon rebate started on April 1. In combination with Dell's 15% discount on Canon lenses through April 5 (using code C31NSS784NH723), you can get the 24-105mm f/4L for barely over $1000. I'm working on a clever rationalization right now...

Tell your wife that it's absolutely essential for capturing those fleeting childhood moments now that your daughter is bigger and more active. Tell her that waiting to buy the lens is counter-productive because the moments are flying past at an ever-increasing pace even as you discuss the purchase with her. Tell her that the photographs you take will be precious memories preserved forever, while the money would be spent in any case, mostly on far less important things.

You DO have a serious hole in your lens arsenal, and the 24-105 will be a GREAT kid lens for playground activity and the like.

Here̢۪s what you do:

Bet your wife $5 that you won̢۪t buy the lens. Go and buy it anyway! This way the store makes a sale, you get the lens and your wife gets 5 bucks. Everyone wins! ;)

Thanks for the heads-up on the rebates Phil! This has been my tactic - for the last few months I have been talking about the lens I want to get (fyi, I settled on the 24-70mm f/2.8 over the 24-105mm), and been pointing out on every possible occasion I could where "if only I had this lensâ€Â¦". My wife is to the point where she now knows just about everything there is to know about the lens, when to use it, and my pros/cons of this one over the 24-105mm (which I have also been drooling over - hard decision between the two). She is SO sick of hearing about it that when I mentioned this morning about the rebates she said "would you just go buy the darn thing!"

Ahhhhh, finer words have never been spoken. :-) Now to finish my taxes and figure out if I can actually afford the thing. :-)

You could get a D200 for that kind of money Philip.

I love my 24-105. Took some pics of the "fleeting moments" of the kids playing in the sprinkler using it just yesterday... So, see, tell your wife Bear's comments really are true! They've been verified and everything! Good luck!

Ha! Finally, some advice I can use. ;-)

As you know, Marac, bodies come and go so it's all about the glass. I'm going to be wrestling with this one all week...

so is the canon rebate on all lenses?

Instead of thinking as it as "spending money", consider it to be "saving money." ;-)

No, but most lenses are on there, as well as the 350XT and the 5D. Here's a link to the PDF.
